So much of what comes next for the Pāʻia Sugar Mill is possible because of the people who continue to show up and believe in this vision.

We’re especially grateful to the County of Maui for their support, and to everyone who has supported our mission along the way. This work is, and always will be, about creating opportunities for the people of Maui. 🌱

There’s more to come. 📫 Subscribe to our newsletter at PaiaMill.com to stay up to date on what’s happening at the Mill.

"...we can't forget all those people that came before us. We're trying to take that legacy and move it [forward] to the future."

TIDE TOGETHER, a community-sourced mural project in Pāʻia, Maui, is more than just art. It is deeply rooted in the rich history and treasured memories of the town of Pāʻia. 🌊🌺

"visual metaphors celebrate this interconnectedness", said artist Efren Rebugio Jr. He also added, "Ultimately, this mural is an invitation to see ourselves as contributors to the whole and to the places we call home. Like the tide, a thriving community is shaped not by any one person, but by many people flowing together."

In September 2000, the Pāʻia Sugar Mill closed permanently.

But the memories of its workers and residents live on.

Ask those who remember the Mill, and many will tell you it wasn't just about the sugar industry. It was about the people, the families, and a community where neighbors looked out for one another.

“This mural is about all of us and the role we each play in caring for the places and the communities we call home,” artist Efren Rebugio Jr. shared during the unveiling and blessing of the new mural at the historic Pāʻia Sugar Mill on July 16.

The new Tide Together mural reflects Pāʻia’s enduring connection between people, industry, the ocean, and community.

“The buildings matter, the history matters — but it’s the people and the stories that give this place its soul,” said Wayne Thibaudeau, co-owner of Pāʻia Sugar Mill. “Our hope is that the mill will once again be a place where people can create, build, learn and work together.”

Mahalo to Maui Public Art Corps, the County of Maui , artist Efren Rebugio Jr., and the many community members whose stories and support helped bring this mural to life. We’re honored to be part of a future that continues to celebrate Pāʻia’s history while creating new opportunities for generations to come.
