Gems Music Publications proudly presents Joseph Bologne's Sinfonia Concertante in F major, Op. 10 no. 1 for 2 solo violins, solo viola and strings (rough draft).

Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, was a trailblazing composer, violinist, and conductor of the 18th century. Born in Guadeloupe to a wealthy French plantation owner and an enslaved African woman of Senegalese descent, Bologne overcame the racial barriers of his time to become one of the most celebrated musicians in France. His remarkable talents earned him a prominent place in Parisian society, where he led orchestras, composed virtuosic works, and influenced the musical world alongside contemporaries like Mozart and Haydn.

These Sinfonia Concertante (also a No. 2 which I will work on next) are historic because they represent the earliest example I can find of solo viola writing by a composer of African lineage. These were written in 1778-79, about the same time as Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante, and very possibly pre-dating and inspiring Mozart's.

Here is the promo piece for the Anzoletti Concerto for violin/viola (1 soloist) I orchestrated and published with Gems Music Publications which is getting its 2nd and 3rd performances in Putignano and Bari, Italy next week, with the incredible Marco Misciagna! I am so excited to come to Italy again, leaving this Saturday- any excuse to go to Italy! I will squeeze in a little Rolla research while I am there too.
