But, ITS ON SALE … THIS WEEK ONLY!

Many vendors will purchase from their sales rep/distributor for a variety of prices…. Rarely, will a rep give the same price twice as they are allowed to
Fluctuate how ever they wish that day! A rep might give a store .49 a square foot one day, and the next, .99 ! Also, they can buy at lower prices if they buy in BULK! By buying in bulk, they are going to need to sell the product as soon as possible, as they need the money to pay for it within typically 30 days! If the price is insanely low, it is probably a factory second, or a purchase from another company! If the vendor tells you the price is $2.99 per square foot, it probably cost them 99 cents. Offering just a little more (some people will tell them right off the bat they got a quote from a different company for lower) you can get the carpet, LVP or vinyl dirt cheap! They will probably ly sell it to you at an insane price simply to move it out of their warehouse.
NEVER believe them if it’s a limited time span to buy. The price didn’t change, just their “possible” profit margin. NEVER pay the first price given!!! Sale prices are a draw to get the customer in the store, then flip to a different profit for an even higher profit!

Gimmicks!

If you need gimmicks to draw attention, it typically means you need something OTHER than what you have to market to market your product. What that breaks down to, is that business isn’t quite what it should be, and the business needs to attract the public by GIVING AWAY something to get you in the door! For the most part, it can be a gift certificate, often to a coffee house, or a small appliance such as what banks used to offer when opening an account! Larger items have been paid by the company at a huge discount, allowing for often discontinued items to be given away. Getting a customer in to register for the raffle is the biggest game there is for often new businesses in order to get their foot in the door to your wallet. Once you’re in the store, you must then offer up the credit card to register! That’s the game. It’s a trade off! A business will gamble on a precise number of “tickets” being sold to pay for the prize. Anything over that dollar amount if additional profit for them!
Nothing is free. Nothing is given away.
If you need a gimmick full of “register to win” items, you probably don’t need to be in business.
The only time it is typically expected of acceptable, would be for seminars, fairs, and workshops. Even measurements should be at no charge, as they are a necessary part of job installation! Without them, you’d have no idea how much flooring you need! So winning that in a raffle should be a red flag as to what else you’re paying for!
Buyer beware!

For this weeks things to check when buying floor covering, let’s talk about the word “FREE”!

As we all know, NOTHING is free when shopping! Example: free WITH PURCHASE, or FREE rooms, FREE installation, or even FREE carpet! Notice anything? You have to spend money to get the deal, and SOMEBODY’S gotta pay for it! Most times, either the carpet, LVP, vinyl or hardwood has been purchased at a very very low price (we’ll get into why later 😉) so it can be sold for slightly less. The installer is NOT, I repeat NOT going to do ANYTHING for free! He (or she) is going to make a living too! And they have their set prices for their jobs! So how to they offer free? They purchase low quality product, and at a large quantity for an even better price, offering it only on these certain products, OR in order to get the special offer, you MUST pay FULL PRICE for ANOTHER ROOM at a MARKED UP PRICE!
The store isn’t going to tell you it would be for only one room, but now, they’ve got you in there, and telling you they’re giving you something for free, that’s really NOT!
IE: I want 1 bedroom done in carpet.
Price for carpet is $1. A sqft. Install free for that room…. But now, you have to get another room done! So carpet is still $1 for the same carpet (probably thin and low warranty) but installation is going to be $2.25 sq ft for the second room! It would regularly be only $1, but they’re doubling it to account for the first room! Don’t be fooled! And there’s a little extra added for the company to make even more profit!

Always check the quality of your products by going online and looking up the manufacturer. If you can’t find it, there’s a reason! Use these reviews to decide on your purchase! A salesman wants you INSIDE their store! They want your money NOW! Once they have a deposit, they have the sale! Orders are rarely refunded!!!

July 1st, our building will be available to rent.
Options will be available to either rent the downstairs showrooms and warehouse, as well as upstairs offices, or independently.

Gimme a shout to either show or negotiate rental terms.
I’d very much be interested in a minimum of 5 year terms… but willing to play it by ear.

NO… the property is NOT for sale… Rent only.

Whenever you see “FREE”…. Especially in a service oriented business, you should be aware. It’s NOT free!

Businesses can hide costs, in what is called “loading” the cost of a product, then reducing the cost of services or offering it free in order to draw the customer. This “loading” is what pays for any type of free gifts or specials that are offered by the company. Nothing is free. It’s an often used sales tactic to get the customer inside the store, then offer them something that sucks the customer in to buying the product, often lesser quality, and or overstocked and can not sell otherwise. Human nature to take what is given.. especially if it’s free, but there’s a big hook in that fishing line! Often carpets (and other products) can be sold cheap…(believe me they are) then offer free installation. The carpet itself is often sold now at only 3 times the cost, and installation is paid to the inexperienced installers (many are not licensed, bonded or insured… you can ask for a copy of these licenses!!!!!) out of the mark up you just paid for a lesser quality carpet! Also, you may need to wait on installation for months and months… NOT because they’re so busy, but because they’re waiting for a return on YOUR money (getting money up front) to pay for rolls of inexpensive carpet that was purchased on a payment plan. The cheaper the carpet, the more profit for the store. This is why most larger businesses will purchase from big box stores, as they are a staple, and prices rarely fluctuate. Less expensive to buy cheap carpet with the same set of installers rather than get even cheaper and having to wait, (and still not quality) and taking whatever is offered for an installer.

As always with my tips for the trade to the customer:
BUYER BEWARE when it’s FREE. When you read the sign, you just spent money without even knowing it, and they’re banking on it. Literally.

Helpful hint for the week for buyer beware:

If it’s on sale… it may not be on sale!

Some stores will lower the price on a particular product they may have had in their inventory in order to tell you “there’s a sale on …..” ! Nope. There’s not.
What the company is trying to do, is get you to THINK their price is lower than their competition, by giving you a deal… when they actually bought it for a lower price, so regular price is really waaaay over priced!
In lowering the price to you, they’re just taking a standard amount of profit plus commission. If they can get a deal from the vendor, lowering the price just a little, means they make just as much if not more in profit!

SHOP AROUND! For the love of Pete, physically go to at least 2 stores before putting down one dime!
A couple places will tell you the sale is off tomorrow…. WRONG! They want your money, and they want it NOW so you are invested in them alone! No store will tell you yesterday’s prices are not good today except for a big box which sets their prices so low, it will not matter. Buying carpet can be much like buying a car!

Are big box stores just as good?
Why the huge price difference?

Answer:

To a degree. Carpet is carpet, LVP IS LVP… but look at the fine print. THIS is what is going to determine how long your floors will last.
Big box stores sell LVP all day long. But what is the ware layer? How many years is the product warranty going to last and what does it cover? ASK!!!
For LVP, the higher the ware layer, the longer you can expect your flooring to last.
In Carpet, a more dense, 45, 60 or even deep 90 heavy is not going to be sold at big box stores! EVER! Think of thread count in your sheets! How long would 100 ct or even 250 last if you’re on it all day and night for a couple years? Seems will go, luster will fade, stains will never come out, and holes show up out of nowhere!

Quite a few builders will go with a dirt cheap flooring to get the job done and the building / house closed to sell. That’s it! The least they have to spend, the better, as they will make more money at the sell. Speck homes especially! Most are designed to need to be replaced within 5 years of purchase.

Suggestion:
If and when possible, as your builder if you can select your own flooring from a reputable dealer. They will give you a budget. Anything OVER that budget will need to be paid by the buyer/customer. This is SO well worth it in the long run, unless you do NOT have kids, pets and only plant to live in the home a year or so before flipping it.
Do - it- yourselfers come out ahead when they don’t have the money to spend on luxury flooring, and just need something down, planning on spending the time and money a couple years down the road once kids are gone and pets as well.
Many stores have financing available, and will make it worth your while to invest in something at least mid grade to make it worth your time to even purchase it the first time! You ARE paying for flooring in your new home purchase! If buy an older home, invest in what you WANT when you can. YOU will be living in it! Don’t be fooled! There is a purpose for these do it yourself big box floors. They are designed to get you through. That’s it.

My suggestion? Wait, and buy what you WANT! It’s typically on sale somewhere, and someone will be willing to sell it for less but only when asked! We all have set prices, but much like a car…. Somebody will make you a deal! Ask for it! And do your research! It’s worth it. 😉
