There is a powerful idea hidden in this image: sometimes progress does not require you to become stronger. It requires you to become lighter.

Think about the person climbing that hill.

He is moving forward, but he is carrying far more than he needs. The stones in his bag may represent many things: old expectations, guilt, fear, failed relationships, unnecessary responsibilities, other people’s opinions, the need to prove yourself, possessions you have outgrown, or even goals that no longer belong to you.

And here’s the strange thing about human beings … We often confuse carrying more with being more committed.

We tell ourselves … I have to keep this relationship because we’ve been together for years.

I have to keep this job because I’ve already invested so much.

I can’t abandon this plan because I told everyone about it.

I have to keep proving myself to people who doubted me.

So we keep adding stones to the backpack.

Then one day we wonder why the journey feels so difficult.

But perhaps the question isn’t … How do I become strong enough to carry this?

Perhaps the better question is .. Why am I carrying it at all? That is a profound shift.

Because there are things in life that require perseverance. But there are also things that require release.

You don’t need more discipline to carry every burden.

Sometimes you need the wisdom to distinguish between a responsibility and a weight.

A responsibility moves you toward something meaningful.

A weight simply consumes energy.

And the painful part is that letting go can feel like failure.

But it isn’t. A climber who throws unnecessary stones out of his backpack isn’t giving up on reaching the summit. He is making the summit easier to reach.

The same is true in life. You may need to leave behind a version of yourself that only existed to please other people.

You may need to stop explaining yourself.

You may need to forgive someone without allowing them back into your life.

You may need to abandon a goal that once mattered but no longer does.

You may need to stop carrying yesterday into tomorrow.

Because every journey has a hidden cost:

Everything you carry takes energy away from where you’re going.

So perhaps growth isn’t always about adding.

Another skill. Another achievement.

Another responsibility. Another relationship.

Another goal. Sometimes growth is subtraction.

Removing what is unnecessary. Releasing what is finished.

Accepting what cannot be changed.

And finally understanding that you don’t have to prove how much weight you can carry to deserve the view at the top.

Sometimes the fastest way forward isn’t to push harder.

It’s to put something down.

In Homer’s The Odyssey, Penelope—Odysseus’ loyal wife—has several dreams. In one of these dreams, she watches 20 pet geese eating wheat far from the water. Suddenly, a massive mountain eagle swoops down from a mountain and breaks all of their necks, killing them. The dead geese lay scattered around the palace, and Penelope weeps in distress, but the eagle returns and speaks to her in a human voice: The geese represent her suitors, and the eagle stands in for Odysseus himself, who will kill all the suitors on his return, the bird tells her.

This dream interpretation is one of the earliest recorded in human history, and it bears certain striking features that are not only common across dream interpretation in ancient Greece—but that have shaped the study of meaning in language and text ever since. This is the argument that classicist Mirjam Kotwick makes in her new book The Ancient Interpretation of Dreams: a long line of Greek thinkers, including Homer, Aeschylus, Herodotus, Plato, and Aristotle, she writes, engaged in an intellectual practice of dream interpretation using a shared method—essentially reading by resemblance, or the logic of likeness—and this method continues to shape how we interpret figurative language today.

Nautilus spoke with Kotwick about Penelope’s dream, the relationship between dream interpretation and magic, what Hippocrates thought the body could communicate through dreams, and what common modern concepts such as metaphor might have arisen from the ancient practice of dream interpretation.

Most classrooms teach us what to think rather than how to think. We are rewarded for repetition and penalized for deviation, which kills the very essence of learning. The two things that education should teach us are these; Think freely, speak easily...

If you graduate with a degree but remain afraid to voice an unpopular truth, the system has failed you. Real education should provide the intellectual tools to form your own path and the social confidence to walk it out loud. Do you believe it is possible to be truly educated within a system that demands conformity?
