Imagine the gratefulness and gratitude of being able to read and meditate on the Word of God. Oh, the life changes that this ability brings; spiritually, emotionally, and physically. We have the privilege of seeing this first hand with those we serve in India.
Try to imagine you are 25 years old, and you do not know how to read or even write your name. You were sold or tricked into slavery at the age of 9 years old and never allowed to go to school. How can this be possible in the year 2022? However, it is common for girls in India and the way of life in the red-light districts. In the red-light area where we work, 27 women are coming for literacy class. This is huge! The women are seeing Hope! 5 of the ladies have just completed the course and can read and write. They are so happy to be able to read the Bible, we gave them. The others are progressing and faithfully studying. They are wanting their children to go to school.
In this same area, we are tutoring 51 children to help enroll them in school, they have never been to school. 10 children that we previously enrolled in school are now coming for an English-speaking class, and 10 women are also coming to learn English. We also have 4 girls and 4 boys enrolled in pre-university. This is so exciting for us and very encouraging and exciting for the women and children.
Currently, in our other locations, we are tutoring approximately 100 children every day and working with the families to keep them in school. We also have 50 children in our preschool. Approximately 15 of our former tutoring students attend college. We are praising God for the changes and accomplishments we have seen in this area.
On September 8th, we celebrated International Literacy Day. We are thrilled and blessed to be making a difference in so many lives. Education does so much more than teaching someone to read or write. Education helps reduce poverty, child marriages, and pregnancies, it reduces child mortality and so much more. An educated girl is more likely to become involved in the workforce and, in turn, bring economic stability to her family and community.
Studies have shown that women invest 90% of their income into their families and communities, thus reducing poverty and improving health, safety, and education for everyone. In some countries, a young girl is more likely to die in pregnancy or childbirth than to complete primary education.
