Hello and good morning from the workbench, folks! Welcome to October 2016 already, and the early days of my second year have been very productive so far. The approaching change of season is just around the corner, and that often impacts the amount of repair work that comes in - but for this post, I'll keep it a few simple upgrade suggestions for those whose gear is in good working order.
For the acoustic players, your main tone boost can be enhanced by changing out your bridge saddle to either bone or a synthetic equivalent, such as Tusq or Corian. Brass bridge pins are another simple enhancement, and can add brightness as well as sustain. If you want to expand your tonal range further, a good EQ system can help, either as an upgrade or an initial installation.
Electric upgrades are more obvious; pickup changes, different pots, input jacks, switches, and tone capacitors all impact the overall sound. A change of wiring type and/or shielding will also improve performance. Bridge saddles are another option here as well, or any other hardware that benefits from a more sturdy solid replacement. Tremolo-equipped guitars should have a good set of springs, and enough of them, to maintain intonation and balance for the string gauges in use.
A change of string gauges alone may get the sound you're after, so long as you don't over-tax the overall construction. Shorter-scale guitars handle heavier gauges better than standard-scale models do, for instance.
That's it for this go-round, and it's food for thought (or at least a snack). Come on by C & C Guitar and see us, whether to shop or just visit. Happy playing! (y)
