Desiree Stewart is a gifted linguist with a natural talent for learning languages. She also sings in bars and nightclubs. Unknown forces transport Desiree to Tir, the world of the Clanntirians. Beings very similar to humans. The Bolands, a family of tavern keepers, take her in. Desiree uses her skills to learn the Clanntirian language to fit into this new world. However, all understand that the rulers of Tir, the Leadership, may discover Desiree's secret. They possess plans to colonize and exploit nearby planets for economic gain. Desiree's skill in learning languages would be a valuable asset as the Clanntirians encounter other beings. The members of the Leadership are willing to kill to achieve their goals.
