The American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money is one of the greatest events in the annual numismatic calendar, and I’m glad to have attended this year’s event in Pittsburgh. It was great seeing friends both old & new, doing some business and beholding an incredible assemblage of rare coins, all under one roof! Looking forward to next year!

UPCOMING SHOW: Vienna Quarterly Coin & Stamp Show, Vienna Community Center, 120 Cherry Street, Vienna, Virginia, August 5th and 6th, 2023.

We will have a nice selection of recent purchases and new material available at this show, including this well-worn but quite attractive 1852-D US $5 dollar gold, PCGS F15. This coin was made at the short-lived United States Mint at Dahlonega, Georgia, which used the well-known "D" mint mark before the same mark was repurposed for the currently-operating mint at Denver, Colorado. The mint at Dahlonega opened in 1838, mainly for the purpose of coining locally-mined gold found in Georgia. The Dahlonega Mint produced gold coins only, and closed permanently in 1861, shortly after the onset of the Civil War.

There were 91,584 $5 coins made at Dahlonega in 1852, but it's estimated that only a couple of hundred of those coins still exist today.

Depicted in the photo, a magnificent proof 1885 "V" nickel with spectacular rainbow toning, graded PCGS PR67. From an original mintage of just 3,790 proof examples. The 1885 is always a popular date, due to the low mintage of circulation strikes that year. While there are some proof examples graded higher than this 67, few can beat this one for sheer beauty and eye appeal. This is one of the items we'll be showcasing at the upcoming Whitman Expo.

A Coronation is a spectacle unlike any other. This weekend’s Coronation of King Charles III was no different, as the first Coronation of a new British monarch in 70 years. This silver medal is from the Coronation of the last King named Charles, Charles II, in 1661. The medal was designed and engraved by Thomas Simon, and was the official medal for the occasion. It’s just under 30 millimeters in diameter.
