An ecosystem pond is a pond engineered so that its parts feed each other: the waste of one component becomes the food of another, the way a natural pond works.

Get the loop right and the pond largely takes care of itself. Get it wrong, or leave pieces out, and the owner spends every summer fighting symptoms.

So what are those 5 components?

1. Mechanical & biological filtration - aka skimmer & biofalls

2. Rocks & gravel - more than just decoration

3. Circulation - such as a pump

4. Fish - more than just pets

5. Aquatic plants - aka nature's filter

If our holding tank is bigger than your koi pond, then it's probably time for an upgrade.

We got a call from these clients a couple months ago. Their koi fish had outgrown their starter pond and needed a bigger home.

So, we got to work designing a water feature that would not only give the fish more room, but would become a focal point for their yard.

This koi pond and waterfall sits right outside their back door, where they can now enjoy it day and night from their living room, back porch, and pool area.

We completed the look with a couple of lights for nighttime enjoyment, caves and hiding spots for the fish, and lots of plants that will contribute to the ecosystem.

Pond building is a little like Tetris. Choosing the right rocks and placing them in such a way that they all fit together just right takes skill.

The rocks and boulders that line the pond help anchor edge slopes so it keep its structure. They also protect the pond liner from UV damage and physical wear, and create surface area for beneficial bacteria to filter water.

Strategically placed boulders also direct water flow and provide vital hiding spots for fish.

It's an art and a science, and one of the things that sets professional pond builders apart from the rest.

Water features like these make an impression.

The boys are out in the Stillwater / Mechanicville area building a pond with a stream addition.

We had to clear out the patio pavers and lots of gravel to get this thing started, and we are underway.

Before you know it, we'll have this water feature up and running, so be sure to check back for the final reveal.
