Apparently, there were signs.

Looking back I think what drew me to design was never just the pretty part.

I loved thinking about how a home worked just as much as how it looked. Where the furniture should go. How a room could function better. What would make it more comfortable. And then, all the fabrics, finishes and details that gave it personality.

That combination is still what I love most about design today- making a home beautiful without forgetting that people actually have to live in it.

Turns out the signs really were there all along, just ask my mom!

A little of how we got here because a lot has changed around here in the last couple of years.

I’m Susan, interior designer, shop owner, professional sample collector + the person behind Susan Teachey Design and Curated Pawleys.

A few years ago I was running my design business from Alabama. Then life brought me back to the Carolinas. My family moved to Pawleys in the summer of 2024 and a few months later I took a pretty big leap and bought a local home shop. That November, Curated Pawleys began.

The first year brought a lot of change both personally and professionally. My dad was sick most that time and passed away in June 2025. The women working alongside me stepped in more than they probably even realized. They helped keep the shop going, welcomed people in, handled the day-to-day and gave me room to be where I needed to be with my family. I will always be grateful for that. 🫶

Just a year later we expanded Curated into a much larger space in June 2026. Once again they were right there with me through all of it. Moving, organizing, setting up and somehow making the whole thing come together. Looking back it’s hard to believe how much changed in such a short amount of time!

Today the Curated Crew is still the friendly faces welcoming you into the shop, helping you find the right thing and keeping everything moving behind the scenes. Their hard work, ideas and support are such a big part of what Curated Pawleys has become.

And maybe the most special part is that I still feel my dad guiding me along in so much of what I’m building. ❤️

Sometimes the inspiration is right outside the window.

The shimmer, movement and mix of color in this tile reminded me of sunlight hitting the water, which felt just right for a coastal bathroom without taking the theme too literally.

Coastal design doesn’t have to announce itself.

Ever wonder how many questions it takes to land on the final selection?

More than you’d think.

Is the color right?
More texture or less?
What’s the price point?
Does it work with everything else already happening in the room?
Will it arrive on time?

Sometimes the final decision comes down to two samples that look almost identical to everyone else. But those little differences are what pull the whole room together.

This is the part of design you don’t always see.

Sometimes the value isn’t in finding more options. It’s in having a trained eye, the right resources + knowing which one is right.

Colorful wallpaper is always a good idea.

Six different projects, six looks and six reminders that wallpaper can change the whole feel of a room.

Sometimes it adds energy. Sometimes it softens a space. Sometimes it gives a small room the personality it was missing.

No two of these are the same and that’s the point.

The best part of finishing a vacation rental project might be hearing what the guests notice afterward!

When we designed The Scotch, the goal was never just to make it look good in photos. It had to work for large families, different ages, long beach weeks and all the activity that comes with a full house.

So seeing reviews mention the bedrooms, game room, how well equipped the house is and even the attention to the design details means a lot.

And then there is the one every vacation rental owner wants to hear:

“Absolutely planning on booking again.”

That’s when you know the design did its job.

When your idea of taking a break from design is reading a book about design on the beach. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I had the chance to hear Johnathan H. Miller talk about his book with a small group of us at High Point a few weeks ago and get my copy signed. I finally had a little time to sit down and enjoy it.

His note inside might be my favorite part: “Nothing simple or plain.”

Seems about right.

What you see before the pretty part.

A lot of design happens long before the room starts looking finished. Layouts get adjusted, materials are compared, dimensions are checked and decisions are made in an order that keeps everything moving.

This part may not always make the final reveal, but it’s usually where the work really starts coming together.

It’s one of my favorite parts of the process.

Not every bathroom needs to be loud to make an impact.

This one came together through a mix of quiet details that still feel special: soft green tile, warm wood shelving, clean-lined cabinetry and black fixtures for contrast.

Fresh, functional and pulled together in a way that feels calm the moment you walk in.
