Let the test begin. Gulf Series 10’ and 13’ samples arrived today. The 13’ was my biggest challenge. Making a 13-footer that wasn’t a broomstick, and 2 pieces. At first wiggle, they nailed it. I’ll get these out tomorrow and throw some weight. See how they handle.

Had some fun out there this morning before opening the shop.

Panhandle Salt guide Jimmy had a lesson booked and headed east, so I took the opportunity to go west. That way we could compare notes later in the morning and see what was happening in different stretches of beach.

Jimmy spent the first hour cast netting live bait with his client and showing him multiple ways to fish what the conditions were giving us. When the Gulf is packed with bait, the bite can actually get tougher. There is so much competition in the water that your presentation has to stand out.

He also leaned hard into lighter setups since his client had some back issues. The customer was surprised at what was possible with a FishGum Runt Rod, fishing just a few feet off the beach.

I played with bluefish for about an hour before heading back to the shop. The Strike One Outdoors 1.5 oz was getting crushed, and the 0.5 oz Glow Nickel was doing damage up close.

’Tis the season to sling lures.

Do you have the right setup for this style of surf fishing?

Testing the waters this morning for up coming trips this week. These guys were stacked about 20 yards off the beach. Along with a massive school of mullet. Strike One Outdoors lure, 1.5 oz. I’ve been playing with these an another option to bring in the shop. Have some custom top water poppers coming from them also. Safely released. Look at that belly.

It’s getting close to season, and now is the time to get your reels ready.

A 1,000-yard spool of Land-Line can fill three reels if you spool them correctly. Start with 50–80 yards of mono backing, depending on reel size, then finish with around 300 yards of braid.

That mono backing saves money and keeps you from wasting hundreds of yards of braid that will never see the water.

There is a lot of inexpensive braid on Amazon, but cheap braid is cheap for a reason. A lot of it is thick, inconsistent, does not last, and is made for anglers who are not putting much thought into their line setup.

Land-Line was designed with a purpose: land-based fishing on the Gulf Coast.

Our 20 lb braid is thin, slick, and strong, but it was not designed for you to strap on any size sinker you want and let it fly. We are a Panhandle-based company, and we built this line around the way we fish Gulf waters.

Land-Line was manufactured with 2–5 oz sinker weights in mind. We wanted the thinnest braid possible, made from premium fibers, that could handle our style of surf fishing while maximizing casting distance without the need for a shock leader.

Because the line is so thin, it takes a lot more of it to fill a spool. That is why mono backing matters. It saves you money and gives you the right amount of braid where you actually need it.

Give Land-Line a throw next time you are spooling up a reel.

We are confident it will become your new braid of choice.

If you are unsure what knot to use attaching your mono to braid, reach out and myself or a team member can walk you through it.

Bate Your Bait

Ain’t nothing wrong with giving your bait a little extra attention.

Pro-Cure and OP Bait Soak get used a lot around here, not only by me, but by the guides who run trips with us. Some days, a little scent enhancement can make a difference.

Lately, I’ve even been dabbing a little on FishGum.

Use Pro-Cure on your floats, hooks, line, bait, and just about anything else going in the water. It is a simple way to add scent and help your presentation stand out.

You can find Pro-Cure, OP Bait Soak, Fish Gum, and the rest of our surf fishing bait products in the shop or on our website.

On this day, August 14, 2024, we opened the shop down on Perdido Key. We had built a reputation over the years running surf fishing charters and lessons, and it was time fore the next step.

I was almost laughed out of town when I told people the plan: convert a 24’ x 8’ trailer into a surf fishing shop.

But I had support from the people who mattered most, the ones living under my roof, so I did not let the doubt deter me.

Over the last two years, a lot has come out of this little trailer.

The birth of the Guide Association. Perdido Leader. Land-Line Braid. The Upper Limit Tournament. The Gulf Series rods. Strong relationships with MyFWC Florida Fish and Wildlife, Florida Sea Grant, Gulf Islands National Seashore, Perdido Key State Park, the Perdido Key Area Chamber of Commerce, and other local businesses that want to see us succeed.

Not everyone stood around waiting for us to fail. A lot of people stepped up, helped, supported, and trusted what we were trying to build.

I had a strong feeling that people wanted to learn how to surf fish. They needed a safe place to ask questions without getting the “snook candy” answer. A place where someone would actually explain how the rig, rod, reel, bait, or leader in their hands works without making them feel stupid for asking.

Hopefully, that is what myself and our team have provided over the last two years.

If Panhandle Salt has helped you in some way over the last 24 months, please leave a comment. There may be someone reading this who is hesitant to ask for help because they are afraid of being ridiculed.

Thanks for all the support, y’all.

Without you trusting us, supporting us, shopping with us, fishing with us, and believing in what we are building, we would not be living this lifestyle.
