Preachers of the Word of God must prepare themselves for their calling as Christian ministers, and seminary can indeed provide many useful advantages in that preparation. But the greatest preparation cannot be gained from a seminary, because the preacher’s greatest need is the Holy Spirit. Ventura shows the Holy Spirit as both a divine person, possessing all of God’s attributes and leading and working salvation and sanctification, as well as a vital presence, without Whom our best efforts are unprofitable. The Holy Spirit’s ministry for the preacher of God involves three parts: illumination (the opening of the heart and mind to receive scriptural truth), filling (giving the Spirit control of the faculties and powers to enable the accomplishment of a task for God), and power (the God-given unction that lifts his efforts beyond a fleshly exertion and enabling the preacher to become a channel through whom the Spirit works). Ventura shows that ministers may experience more of the Holy Spirit’s ministry by not grieving or quenching the Spirit, and by prayer.

This issue of the FGB is about Predestination—a rigorously debated, violently despised doctrine that fills the hearts of those who embrace it with joy unspeakable and full of glory. Arthur Pink introduces the subject with an essay about the sovereignty of God. Until people actually understand who God is, they will have no foundation for grasping predestination. Dutch theologian Wilhelmus à Brakel gives us general observations about predestination. David Martyn Lloyd-Jones gives a detailed exposition of Romans 8:29 and God’s eternal purpose. Benjamin Keach offers a beautiful, biblical look at the doctrine of election. Predestination includes God’s act of calling His elect children. Charles Spurgeon powerfully illustrates God’s effectual call to His people. The Puritan Christopher Love then identifies the marks of effectual calling. Does predestination actually have benefits? Yes, declares William Perkins, who gives us an encouraging list of God’s benefits to us in His predestinating grace. This doctrine has been subject to heaps of abuse over the centuries. J. C. Ryle defends the doctrine and helps us to view it biblically. Octavius Winslow wants us to know that this doctrine—loathed by so many—is wonderfully encouraging to Christ’s people. And lastly, Spurgeon reminds us that Scripture reveals that believers will one day be like Christ!
