Her patient was dying.
But one fear remained: what would happen to the little dog she loved after she was gone?
While caring for a woman during her final days in Georgia, nurse Kimberly Still learned about the patient’s beloved Chihuahua, Jax.
The woman spoke about him often. From those conversations, Kimberly understood that Jax was more than a pet. He had been her companion through some of the hardest moments of her life.
After the patient passed away, Jax had no family member able to take him.
He was placed in a shelter outside Atlanta, where his future became uncertain and he was reportedly at risk of euthanasia.
When Kimberly learned where he had ended up, she knew she could not leave him there.
She planned to collect Jax from the shelter and find him a safe, loving home. To her, protecting him felt like one final promise to the woman she had cared for.
Then she met him.
Kimberly quickly realized that she could not hand him over to someone else. The home she had intended to search for was already waiting.
It was hers.
She adopted Jax and introduced him to her other dog. The two reportedly bonded quickly, and Jax settled into his new family as though he had always belonged there.
Kimberly could not take away her patient’s illness or stop the loss that was coming.
But she could make sure the dog her patient loved would not be abandoned afterward.
For people facing the end of life, concern for a pet can be a source of enormous fear. Dogs do not understand why their person suddenly disappears. They only know that everything familiar is gone.
Jax lost the woman who meant the world to him.
But because one nurse saw that his future mattered too, he did not lose his chance to be loved.
