Famous for Next Day Delivery and having the automatic lowest pricing. Sherman's is not your typical store. We weren't normal in 1976, and we're never going to be normal. See, we were founded as a side-hustle when a fiercely-independent woman named Sharon Sherman decided to sell some clocks and gifts while her kids were in school. Her husband Jack was a lineman at CILCO. Do you know how hard it is to be a lineman? Like hard enough that taking a risk to sell some crazy new thing called a "microwave" seemed like a safer way to make a living. Now back then, no one knew what the heck a microwave was, and they sure didn't want to shell out $500 for one. But that wasn't going to stop Jack or Sharon. They constructed a microwave cooking school. Every Peorian and their friend attended Sharon's cooking classes. OK, maybe not everyone, but they were a hit, and we were officially in the home appliance business. Then came the dawn of the flashy big box stores and the world proclaimed, "Local businesses are doomed!". Instead, Jack and Sharon said how 'bout you "Deal Direct with the Owners and Save!"? Peorians liked the sound of that better. They still do. Today more than 190 employees bear Jack and Sharon's can-do attitude across four Central Illinois locations. Their son, Paul Sherman, currently steers this ship. He says all we have to do is, "Make sure our customers are really happy they chose Sherman's." Sounds easy enough, right? Actually no, but working hard is in our DNA. You wanna know something silly? Just the other day we heard a mumbling that rhymed with Hamzon, followed by, "Local businesses are doomed!". We've heard that before somewhere. Over 40 years ago. You can shop plenty of normal stores, but we're happy being different. It's exactly what you're going to love about us.

🇺🇸 We’re proud to feature Central Illinois Legacy in Song as this week’s Charity Giveaway recipient! 🇺🇸

Their mission is all about helping Veterans and their families find healing by transforming their stories into song to help navigate the challenges of military life.

Each year, they host a retreat using creative tools and music-based therapy to support Veterans who served in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iran, Afghanistan, as well as Gold Star families. Grammy-nominated and award-winning songwriters volunteer their time to pair up with Veterans and help put their experiences into words. 🎶

“Many PTSD struggles are invisible,” shared volunteer Cindy R. “Music helps veterans hear or discover in song what they can’t talk about. It helps them put words to something that’s been inside for so long.”

Providing this immersive time of processing, closure, and healing through music is a small gift of gratitude for our nation’s heroes. “Every person involved wants this to be all about the people we serve,” reflected Sue L, another volunteer.

The retreat culminates with a free public concert where family, friends, and the community gather to hear the newly written songs performed by the artists. 🎤 “We like to remind people that they are about to hear a song that didn’t exist as of that morning!” added Sue.

It’s an incredible night of honor and celebration for everyone in attendance. ✨ “We see the impact of this program when families come up to us after hearing their loved one’s song and say, 'We never knew that.' Or when Veterans come out of the songwriting session with tears in their eyes and say, 'This was lifesaving.'”

“At the concerts, we often joke we should have stock in Kleenex!” laughed Sue.

We are honored that this $1,000 Sherman's award will help cover expenses for the 2027 retreat, where heroes can finally turn their unspoken stories into songs of healing.

Meet the Strong Towns Blono team! 👋

Since 2021, they’ve established dozens of neighborhood associations, partnered with city staff, organized cleanups, advocated for zoning and housing changes, and installed public murals and sidewalk displays to enhance safety, all to foster a more vibrant and connected community✨

"Our organization is 100% volunteer-led. Everything we do is a love letter to our community," shared Strong Towns Blono President Noah T.

Strong Towns Blono’s goal is to meet neighborhood needs through high-impact micro-projects, repeated over time. "Often the projects we do are just small enough to fall under the radar of traditional city budgets, but are much more than what individuals can achieve alone. Since we are closest to the problem, we should be empowered to make changes."

"I've found that being in community requires active participation,” added committee member Zach C. “The places, spaces, and relationships around us should not only be enjoyed through a consumer capacity. Because when we join together on a mission, we create something truly meaningful. To me, that's worth celebrating!"

To help fuel their mission, this $1,000 Sherman's award is going toward launching their new Neighborhood Improvement Initiative. 🏡

By partnering with existing neighborhood associations, they plan to invest in small-dollar projects that improve their neighbors' quality of life, such as the beautification of bus stops with benches, fresh flowers 🌼, and signage.

"What our community means to me is that there's a group of individuals whose love is facing the same direction. As we live side-by-side, we learn how to take care of each other and be good stewards," finished Noah.

Across 5️⃣ counties, the Illinois Valley Center for Independent Living team works side-by-side with individuals with disabilities to break down physical and social barriers to independent living.

While they provide free resources like skills training, peer support groups, equipment loans, and personal assistance, advocacy sits at the very heart of their mission. 👇

“Advocacy looks different for every individual,” notes Executive Director, Marie A. “For some, that means we’re assisting with laundry, meals, or transportation. For others, our team champions accessible housing, whether that's transitioning people out of long-term care facilities back into the community, or making home modifications. We also advocate for policy changes through legislative action to protect critical services. These issues are so important to IVCIL because we want people to live their lives to the fullest potential!" 🎉

🏠 Overcoming these barriers takes continuous effort, which is why IVCIL created their Community Grant Program. This initiative funds essential home modifications like ramps, rails, and accessibility equipment to help consumers live independently and inclusively. We’re thrilled that this $1,000 Sherman’s award will help cover project costs and ensure better safety, comfort, and belonging for residents!
