Every year we throw our decorative fall pumpkins and gourds onto the alpaca compost pile at the end of the season, and every year we get some "volunteer" plants that grow (because alpaca compost is amazing!). We are never sure what will come up, but it's always fun to watch the different things grow and bloom. We have huge plants growing with tons of flowers, and this one early bird, overachieving gourd that already reached maturity. So even though it's nearly 90 degrees outside, we're starting our fall decorations. 😂
Can of water for scale.
PS - locals, let me know if you want to purchase some amazing alpaca compost - we have a fair amount ready to go!

Swarm, part 2! The swarming bees clearly love the flag on the golf course and we had a second swarm today. This one was even bigger than Sunday's swarm. John from 4 Brothers was today's swarm retriever. I can't figure out how to add both pictures and a video, so I posted the video, and pictures are in the comments.
PS - the flag has been taken down and is soaking in a bucket of soapy water to try and get rid of any remaining pheromones.

We had a bee swarm today. Evidently our bees are very patriotic! 4 Brothers Honey came out to grab the swarm and get them safely rehomed. No bees (or humans) were injured! 😊

Today was one of the days when farming just sucks. We said goodbye to my heart alpaca Buddy - the alpaca that I've owned the longest and the "face" of Sunnybrook Alpacas (he's the super cute face in the profile picture). Buddy was almost 17 years old (definitely a senior gentleman) and had lost his front teeth (they were worn down to nubs). He never complained, and he was always a good eater despite not having front teeth, but over the past year he had lost weight despite us trying everything possible to put pounds on him. This recent cold snap was the final straw, and he struggled greatly these past few days to stand and eat. After trying everything we and our vet could think of, we made the heart-wrenching decision to euthanize him before his struggling became more than he or we could bear. I know it was the right decision, and I know he is now out of pain, but it hurts to say goodbye to these herd favorites!
A bit about Buddy ... he came to us, along with his mom, from a farm in Montana 16 years ago and had been a staple of Sunnybrook alpacas ever since! He loved people (and snacks) and was the best PR alpaca we could ever ask for. He was a gentleman, a herdsire, and a great herd leader, teaching juveniles how to behave and be good alpacas. He was gentle with the youngsters, but was not hesitant to "school" them when they were misbehaving. Thank you Buddy for being the most amazing alpaca. You will be greatly missed!!!

14+ inches of snow plus a few inches of sleet/ice yesterday. The small John Deere with a plow handled the driveway but today we had to sort out the barn/pasture area. Our large John Deere tractor was the most obvious choice but unfortunately part way through the work, we lost a tire. But never fear ... BABY KUBOTA (as Dan calls it) TO THE RESCUE! We were able to make a path to the barn for clean up purposes. Baby Kubota is now parked in a spot of honor in the garage because we will need quick access for the next several days until we can get the large JD repaired. Farm fun never ends!
