What Every Writer (and Publisher) Need to Know About Rights Ecology

Should you ever pay to publish a book?

"In most cases, you should not pay a publisher to publish your work. If a publisher is seeking a payment, this means that you are likely dealing with a ‘vanity publisher.’ This means that the publisher is intending to make their profit from you, not from selling your book, which is not ideal.

Ideally you want a publisher who believes in the commercial potential of your novel to sell, and at least make back the money it cost to publish the work. Most traditional publishers will not charge you to publish your work, and many will in fact pay you an advance, or a portion of your royalties before the work even sells to cover some of your expenses."

A sad loss. I loved his beautiful work.

"Pinkney was a legend in the world of children's publishing. He won a Caldecott medal for his 2010 picture book The Lion and The Mouse; he also won five Coretta Scott King awards from the American Library Association and a lifetime achievement award from the Society of Illustrators. Over the course of a nearly six-decade long career, he left his mark on over a hundred books, mostly for kids and teenagers, beginning with The Adventures of Spider: West African Folk Tales in 1964."

The Caldecott Medal winner died of a heart attack on Wednesday. He was known for illustrating over 100 books for readers of all ages, including The Lion and the Mouse and Their Eyes Were Watching God.
