WELL, NUTS! The Word Horde Emporium of the Weird & Fantastic will be closed again this WEDNESDAY, September 30 and THURSDAY, October 1 as we exorcise a haunted house. 👻🏚️

That said, we will be BACK on FRIDAY, October 2 and OPEN ALL WEEKEND.

If you need something before Friday, be sure to stop in TODAY before 5pm. 😅

While we’re closed, you can always shop our new website at weirdandfantastic[dot]com for shipping or in-store pickup on or after Friday.

Sadly this closure means we have to delay the sale of Rebecca Yarros’s Threshing Day by a few days. 😫 But if you can stand to wait, we WILL have copies for sale on Friday.

We’re looking forward to seeing you in the store, whether it’s today, or next week!

The feature table at the Word Horde Emporium of the Weird & Fantastic has been refreshed as we continue to celebrate Hispanic/Latinx/Latine Heritage Month!

With so many fantastic Latine voices and stories in genre fiction today, it's always a challenge to pick which titles to feature, but we think it's a good problem to have.

Our display will continue to cycle through a variety of recent releases and favorite titles over the next few weeks, but don't hesitate to ask for a recommendation. (Seriously, Ross will talk your ear off about Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Gabino Iglesias, and so many more amazing authors!)

Today is 9/25, officially designated Dolly Parton Day here in California, honoring the recently departed singer, songwriter, actor, author and philanthropist.

Here at the Word Horde Emporium, we count Dolly Parton among our patron saints (right along with Edgar Allan Poe, with whom Dolly shared a birthday), not just for her songs in the Southern Gothic and Murder Ballad traditions, but for her big-hearted charity work, including giving away more than 300 million books to kids through her Imagination Library.

If you’re looking for a way to honor Dolly’s memory today, we recommend making a donation to the Imagination Library, or following Dolly’s example and picking up a book—or a few—at your local independent bookstore and gifting them directly to kids!

After all, kids who read grow up to be adults who think, and we need all of those we can get!

And if you need inspiration, here are some fantastic new arrivals to our Spooky Kids Zone! 😻

With the weather cooling off and autumn just a few days away it’s totally candle season again. 🕯️

Lucky for you we just got a ton of FRESH STOCK from our favorite chandlers, Old Soul Artisan and Cantrip Candles!

We’ve got seasonal favorites back in from Old Soul Artisan, like Samhain, Sleepy Hollow, Baba Yaga, and Skadi, plus FOUR NEW scents you’ll love: Hekate, Hearthspell, Midwinter Mirth (Jenn’s favorite), and Odin (Ross’s favorite).

Cantrip Candles, maker of TTRPG candles crafted for immersive storytelling, is debuting a new scent, The Gilded Quiver, a sensual and musky blend of rose and oud that captures the essence of a realm where heroes seek peace, privacy, and fleeting pleasures. 🤭

We’ve also brought in a few of their mid-size glass candles. While they don’t include the metal D20 of the larger size, they make a great gift at a nice price point.
