For those that may not know, Boyne USA is looking to relicense their hydro dam on the Boyne River.

The Boyne River has historically been a public river... with a major problem on its shores. Currently Boyne Mountain Resort owns much of the adjacent land surrounding the river and despite being told by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to provide adequate public access to the waters, they have failed to do so since their last license was instated.

Boyne Outfitters treats the waters as a private resource while also asking the DNR to stock their ponds and waters (public resources) with fish which they can charge $750 a trip to catch on their 'Exclusive EK waters' "Exclusive access available only through Boyne Outfitters."

It is obvious that BoyneUSA has not interest in the proper management of the hydro dam nor honoring the rulings that deem the Boyne River as a public waterway. They have failed to provide adequate access points on the river, failed to provide adequate monitoring and protocols for dam management, and disregarded the affects of their actions downstream where local access if more available.

They should not be allowed to relicense their facility until they have shown that they will fix the wrongs they have caused to such a historic public stream.

The last fish of the evening was the best for my client the other night. Not because of its size… but because as we moved down quietly we heard this fish, it was very dark, so we dropped anchor, it sipped again.. revealing its location enough for my guy to strip out a bunch of line, thrown a single cast to the far bank and perfectly predict the current and set the hook 1/1. All the days practice came to rest in that moment and it’s was perfectly executed 🤙🏼

As we approach the summer season and waders get donned/boats head north by anglers from all over the country please, please, please make sure to thoroughly clean and sanitize your gear before entering our waterways! Rivers and Lakes are naturally fragile to invasive species and plant life. We need to make sure that we take the extra step to keep our Northern Michigan waters clean and invasive free!

It takes little to no time at all to make a 1% bleach solution and spray down and scrub waders and boats and allow them to completely dry before your trip to a new watershed. This should be done between adjacent rivers in the same area as well! We can all do better to protect what natural resources we have!

Very humbled and grateful to have made the cover of Michigan Trout Unlimited’s Fall/Winter 2021 Cover - Michigan Trout. The past couple of years True North Trout, myself, and some close friends have been working hard to test and experiment what we find to be circulating in the industry in order to make our clients more successful.
