I told you I’d never leave you hanging!

This list isn’t exhaustive, but these are the people I’ve been working with and alongside for the last six years in Philly’s sustainability scene.

Many of you have been asking about someone else taking over the shop, and while I don’t have anything concrete to share with you, the people I’m talking to wanted me to let you know that the conversations not dead yet! Keep your eye out here and in the newsletter for any updates if things move forward.

I hope you’ll be able to shop with Ray’s again in the future, but in the meantime here’s a list of a bunch of people to help keep you along the sustainable journey.

Heyheyhey! We are planning one last event to mark the end of this chapter of Ray’s Reusables.

We’re going to do a Fond Farewell party for anyone who wants to come out and say bye to the shop/be sure to catch me at the shop. We’ll have cake slices from Bask Bakery, we’ll have some little champagne for a toast, and we’ll have some make-and-takes that I never got around to making: hotly anticipated room sprays!

You don’t need to register for this event, cake and champagne are on me as a thank you for the years of support, but you DO NEED TO REGISTER if you want to make a room spray or body oil. That’s just because I need to know how many bottles to prep. (Comment “farewell” and I’ll send you the link to register for that)

Thank you all for the kindness you’ve shown me these last weeks. I know endings are sad, but I’ve received so much love and support in this decision and that means the world to me.

Bri, Gabi, and I put in a tremendous amount of effort into this refresh and it has been such a joy to share our excitement with everyone who has stopped by.

I also want to take a moment to thank the local vendors, who brought their talents + energy to make our event extra special. If you missed them, be sure to check out KCCO LLC , Julie Woodard , and Hsin-Hui.

Finally, a huge thanks to photographer Zach Henningsgaard ZACK HENNINGSGAARD for helping us capture the event and vibes of the new space.

Just over one week until we become Philadelphia’s first all-in-one eco-hub!

Starting on May 30th, not only will you be able to refill your household supplies and recycle those hard-to-recycle materials, but you’ll also be able drop your compost with us too!

So how will it work? It’s easy:

1. Bring your compost to the shop.
2. Toss your compost in the 32 gallon bin in our alley.
3. Stop at the register on your way out.

In order to make sure that this program is financially sustainable and minimize additional strain on our staff, each drop up to 5 gallons is $5. If you have smaller amounts or want a totally free option, please check out around the corner from the shop (available Saturday mornings from 11-12)

Why add composting, you might ask? There are so many reasons:

-methane created by organic waste in landfills is a HUGE contributor to greenhouse gas emissions
-when you don’t have food in your waste bin at home, you don’t have to put trash to the curb as often
-many people who live in apartments aren’t able to make use of bin swap services
-it’s something I always tell people is a good first step in a waste reduction journey

We’re so excited to be able to offer this program, and we hope you’ll join us for the launch at our Refresh Event on 5/30.

Get ready to be inspired! 🌟 We're turning the launch of our new compost program into a celebration of creativity and community by inviting some amazing shop friends to join us. Each of our pop-up vendors brings a unique energy and passion to the table, and we can't wait to share them with you. Let me tell you about the awesome stuff they're bringing to the table:

🌈(10-2 pm) KC Co - KC Co. makes bold, joy-filled accessories for anyone who likes their style a little fun or funky. Think bold and earthy colors, unexpected combinations, geometric forms, and thoughtful details—all influenced by a background in graphic design. Each piece is intentional and slow-made in small batches right here in NoLibs. Our connection: The owner, Kim, is one of the shop’s earliest customers, and an avid participant in our recycling programs.

🌟(1-4 pm) Juicebox Workshop - Using salvaged textiles, found objects, pigments and thread, artist Julie Woodard creates impressionistic landscapes, multimedia installations, functional sculptures, and wearable pieces that convey her passion for nature, memory, and creative reuse. Our connection: Julie and Ray met through the maker community years ago! You can spot Ray in one of Julie’s pieces of wearable art (a beloved cap) often.

🍰(12-4 or sellout) 30 Percent Patisserie- A play on the common bubble tea question “how sweet would you like it? 100%, 50%, 30%”, 30 Percent Patisserie believes that when desserts are too sweet, you lose the ability to appreciate the true flavors of the ingredients. Trained in pastry in Japan, Hsin-Hui creates sweets representing the ‘less sweet’ philosophy from bubble tea shops. Our connection: Hsin-Hui often recycles flexible plastic bags from the baking process during our flexible plastics week.

I’m so excited to finally share with you what the hype around 5/30 is all about.

In just under 2 weeks we will be adding an exciting new drop off program: compost!

We’re partnering with Bennett Compost to offer this at the shop, making us the city’s first all-in-one niche recycling, composting & refill hub.

We will be posting more details about how this works in the weeks leading up to the event. To make this happen though, we’re going to do a big shop rearrange, so we will be CLOSED 5/25-5/28.

Stay tuned for details about the vendors joining us and the other special surprise we have planned for 5/30 tomorrow :)

We’re putting together something really fun! More details to come soon, but for now, mark your calendars for Saturday May 30. It’s going to be a day of guest vendors, a refreshed space, and a *very* exciting new program.

Gabi and Bri and I have been working super hard behind the scenes on these big updates and we can’t wait to share them with you later this month. So while we’re celebrating our hard work on 5/30, this is a heads up that we are going to close the store from 5/25-5/28 to put all our changes in effect.

There’s nothing to get me fired up and exited like seeing the 10 year business anniversary of a local business. Especially one doing things as amazing as Remark Glass.

If you don’t know, Bottle Underground, our glass collection partner, is the non-profit baby of Remark Glass.

Not only do they come and collect your glass from us, but we actually buy glass back from them! Some of the containers in the store probably had their start in the drop off bin before being de-labeled, sanitized, and purchased by us (or any of their many other business partners!)

In addition to being super cool and keeping glass out of landfill, they also use the jobs they create to do social good by working with anti-recidivism programs.

We are so honored to have worked with Bottle Underground these last four years, and are looking forward to many more 🫙

We had SO many amazing sustainability goals put up on our board this Earth Week. Thank you so much to everyone who participated!

It was hard to pick just a few of my favorites, but I tried to give you a taste of what people posted.

Some of the through lines I saw were around carefully considering purchases/refusing things we don’t need, walking and taking public transport, buying second hand, cooking at home (especially bread it seems?), reducing plastic and trying reusable swaps, and getting back into composting.

Happy Earth Day! I’ve got some refill stats that might surprise you.

We took a look at the last year of refill data, and it’s so awesome to see how much of an impact our little shop is having.

I crunched the numbers this morning, and since this day last year we have refilled a total of over 100,000 oz of products! I wanted to put this into perspective for you, so image looking at 790 gallon jugs of water. Or 6,320 hand soap bottles (like the one you’ve got at your sink).

In reality we filled 5,206 bottles, some of them are more than a gallon, some are much less. A whopping 20 gallons of what we filled last year were through our partnerships with Pietramala and Emmett Philly, both of whom we supply refillable hand soap.

I wish I had kept more data on our recycling programs, but now that I’m collecting it I’ll save that for a big ole mega post next year ;)

Come on out and see us this week for your refills, and when you do don’t forget to take a second to enter our Earth Week Raffle. We’ll draw a winner at the end of the week and they will receive $25 gift card toward the shop.
