Today the conversation goes deeper.

Black entrepreneurs built Shindana Toys so Black children could see themselves. The community shifted its support - and Shindana closed.

Now our dollars flow to Mattel while Black doll makers building right now struggle to scale.

The pattern is not new. The question is whether we are ready to change it.

This is why Yla Eason created Sun-Man in 1985. Not for a shelf, for a kid, so a Black child could hold a superhero and see his own face looking back.

Angel Reese made history as the first WNBA player to have her own Barbie doll - and she received it at a press conference at State Farm Arena in Atlanta on August 3, 2026.

It took Mattel 21 years to create the first Black Barbie after the original doll launched in 1959. Today, a young Black woman from the WNBA holds her own likeness in her hands - smiling, proud, and fully represented.

This moment belongs to every little Black girl who ever picked up a doll and wished she saw herself looking back.
