Red Dog Leather is working with Ajen a bespoke tailoring studio located here in Philly, whose owner coincidentally introduced me to the world of leather and sewing and we’ve been tight since👊. Together, we’re developing a full line of protective gear designed specifically for female decoys and dog trainers.

First up is a custom tailored leather scratch apron for not a scaled down men’s version, not a short cut but a complete redesign with proper chest and side protection, cut and fitted specifically for women. Is this a
First? Most likely.

The photo shows our first mock-up of the women’s apron. Next, we’re exploring lightweight leather breastplates that can go under or over clothing for extra protection during everyday training, not just bite work. I’d also love input from women doing the work. If something doesn’t fit right, or there’s a piece of gear you need, tell me. I want to hear what’s missing, what works, and what doesn’t. This is just the beginning.

Sneak peek at some strapping for a scratch apron designed specifically for women, and women only. Pattern’s drawn up. Just need to figure out what on earth darts are, and how to cut them. Stay tuned. Far too many women are in this sport for the gear to still be designed primarily around men. Women’s bodies aren’t just smaller versions of men’s. The anatomy is different, the way equipment sits on the body is different, and those differences affect fit, movement, and protection. Right now, my focus is on proper upper-body fit and chest protection, especially underneath the arms, where traditional men’s aprons can leave areas exposed. For the women here who use scratch aprons, is there anything specific you’d want included? Anything I’m overlooking? If you need something specific, message me and I’ll build it.

Best brush for leather edge painting?

A lot of people think you need a brand new or specialty brush for painting leather edges, but most of the time, that’s just not true. What matters more is technique. The brush is simply the vehicle that gets the paint to the surface, much like a mop. From there, the paint and how you handle it take over.

Leather edge paint isn’t the same as standard acrylic paint. It’s formulated with additives that control its thickness, buildup, dry time and leveling. So even an old, worn brush can get the job done. But when you move to larger, flatter surfaces using acrylic paint, that’s where a finer, softer brush becomes more important. Longer strokes allow you to work the acrylic paint evenly across the surface, helping it settle and minimizing brush marks to achieve that smooth, glasslike finish. The takeaway? A better brush doesn’t automatically produce a better result. Understanding the material and how to work it is what makes the difference.

That larger brush has been with me since my house painting days and yes, that’s shrink tubing keeping it together👊🇺🇸

Learn it by hand first. Tools are great, but if the edge roller doesn’t fit the job, what then? Fundamentals beat shortcuts every time.

Just when you think there’s a weak link in my gear 🤨

This piece just provides the transition from the shoulder straps to the back straps. The apron itself weighs a few pounds, but this piece alone can handle well over 100. This’ll be finished tomorrow, and it’s gonna be by the looks of it, the most complicated scratch apron I’ve ever designed.

All of my straps are reinforced with nylon. After trimming, I heat lock the cut edge with an iron so it won’t fray. Then it gets covered with the leather liner, glued and stitched together. It’s one of those small steps you never see, but I keep it clean because the finish matters just as much as the build.
