โค๏ธโ๐ฅ๐๐ฏ๐ต Konnichiwa from Japan! A little life update, in case you missed it ~ Iโve been staying in Japan the past month working with a small group of emerging wood fire ceramic artists in a remote town called Tamba Sasayama, and have been having the best time ๐ฅฒ
For the past 4 weeks, we have been immersing ourselves in the making process, exploring new techniques and a wide variety of unique clay bodies specific to this region of the world. I have been loving the opportunity to work in a new space outside of my own studio surrounded by a group of artists from around the world!!
One of my primary goals coming here was to push myself to work outside of my usual production habits, and think about clay in a new way, which was harder than i expected, but Iโm excited with progression! I have still been primarily making wheel thrown work, but have been playing more with asymmetry alterations and sculptural elements.
Earlier this week we finish loading the anagama kiln and started the firing process. I am beyond excited to see the results of this firing and the fruits of all of our weeks of loving labor. I will be traveling home in a few weeks time with bags full of pots and one very special piece from this firing will be featured in our upcoming five year anniversary group show ~ GROWTH, which feels extra relevant at this time ๐ Fingers crossed that it comes out nicely!
I plan to share more about this experience as I digest all of it teachings and experiences. Being immersed in this way has left me feeling eager to share while also feeling like i want to keep it close to my chest and remain present. The push and pull of constant sharing and feeling behind while also not rushing through it all is a theme also mirrored in the wood fired process. Working on patients and intentionality during this time, and forming deep human connections along with it ๐ซ
More to come! But HUGE thank you to Sofie, Clara, Emma, and of course John Dix who has so generously allowed us to use his space. This experience is truly a dream come true, and I am so thrilled that Iโve had this opportunity to travel and learn in such a special place.
