Sharpen your No. 2 pencils and dust off your dictionaries — H&H Books is hosting SPELLADELPHIA, an adults-only, no-holds-barred, throw-down spelling fiasco, and we want YOU to be there.

* COMPETE in teams of up to three for glory, fame, and $500 to donate to your favorite organization!

* CHEER, HECKLE, and SHOW LOVE for our alphabetical acrobats as they battle to the finish

* DONATE money to help support our work to actualize our nonprofit mission

* SPONSOR and show your commitment to free literary programming, indie bookstore culture, and a more literate, weird Philadelphia

The H&H Books crew have been hard at work planning three magnificent author events for you, and they’re happening October 10th, 13th, and 16th. (Yes, all within the same week. Bring us Diet Coke.)

Visit theheadandthehand.com/events to learn more about these talented writers & their work, then head to Eventbrite to register (for free!) to see them in person. It’s going to be a time of joy, intellectual chaos, and lots of seltzer. We can’t wait! Please join us!

Come to The Perch Music & Arts Workshop @ the Emerald Wildflower Garden for the release party for SHE WAS WILD GRASS by katiepbennett. There will be snacks (BYOB!), karaoke, and readings by the author, Hannah Bonner, Sam Heaps, and steph cawley.

If you’re a long-time H&H supporter, then you’ll know Katie from her top-tier curation of the Personal Velocity ✨ reading series. We are SO excited to celebrate Katie the way she’s supported dozens and dozens of emerging writers over the years. 💛

Tickets are free, but registration via Eventbrite is recommended to help us gauge attendance. H&H will have copies of the readers’ books available for purchase. Come on by! 🎤📚🍻

Kristen Millares Young kristen millares young reckons with her own journey to motherhood, reclaiming the divine feminine, finding your community, and so much more in her new memoir, DESIRE LINES. She’ll be at H&H Books on Friday 10/16 at 7 PM in conversation with Minda Honey, author of THE HEARTBREAK YEARS.

HAPPY 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY to Quinn and Colin! They got married at the shop last year in the best wedding outfits we’ve seen so far (SWIPE TO SEE). They stopped in yesterday to buy each other books for their anniversary, which is fitting as One Year Anniversaries are paper. We posted a FRIDAY I’M IN LOVE story feature on them last year, which I’m copying below because it deserves to be celebrated twice.

🩷THEIR LOVE STORY🩷

“Quinn and I met at community college in San Antonio, Texas when Quinn came into the cafeteria to sit and ask directions on how to get to his orientation. The next time we met, we exchanged contact information and started messaging frequently.

Our first date was... interesting (my fault). I asked him to play my favorite game, the ending of which made him cry. A lot. Soon after, I functionally moved in with him and his friends, acting as the house’s driver for school, groceries, etc. (I was the only one who had a car and had a license) That was in 2015. Fast forward 10 years later, and despite some bumps in the road, we are still very much in love with each other. We moved to Philadelphia in October 2022 with our cat Mundy for a new job, and have since added another furball to our lives. 

We’ve been visiting H&H on a regular basis for the past nearly three years now! It’s where we had a botched engagement / pre-top-surgery date, and we thought the store would be the perfect fit for our little 5-person marriage ceremony. We had a wonderful time with our surviving parents and a good friend as our officiant, and we are enjoying married life very much!”

“Friday I’m in Love” is a social media series we do highlighting the couples who reserve our store for Date Nights. It’s our favorite and Date Nights are the coolest. Check out the 🔗 in our bio to reserve your own Date Night or DM us with questions.

HUGE THANK YOU to Circle Thrift for their generous general operating grant!

H&H is a nonprofit, and the shop is more than a bookstore. It’s a community space that offers opportunities for group meetings, free programming, reading series, writing groups and more!

Support like this helps us to keep showing up for our neighborhood and the literary community at large. We are SO THANKFUL for this grant! 💕

BEST PHILLY BOOK CRAWL EVER!

WOW, thank you to everyone who came out and shopped, encouraged, signed, laughed, read, and cut up with us! It was a day for the books.

Days like this show us that community matters big time and that readers are a community like no other!

Thank you to our volunteers and staff for their energy and care yesterday! Thank you to Emma Copley Eisenberg and E. M. Elliott for stoping by to sign books and to our HOT DEBUT SUMMER panelists Samantha Paige Rosen Kim Narby Yu-Mei Balasingamchow and Kat Stoddard for a truly memorable evening.
