FEEDING DUCKS INTENDED FOR CONSUMPTION
In commercial operations, the three breeds or crosses of ducks most commonly raised for meat production include the white Pekin (Anas platyrhynchos), Muscovy (Cairina moschata), and hybrid, or mule, ducks, which are a cross of the first two breeds. Because of different growth rates, the nutritional requirements for the three duck types differ somewhat. Pekin ducklings are typically marketed at 6 to 7 lb., obtained at seven to nine weeks of age, having consumed 20 to 25 lb. of feed.

Diving Duck

-Ducks that dive deeply into the water in pursuit of food, such as fish, insects, and aquatic plants, are skilled divers. These ducks can be awkward and ungainly on land and prefer to stay in the water. Additionally, in order to take off from the water's surface, they must gain speed. The scaup, goldeneye, canvasback, tufted, and redhead ducks are among the species that dive.

Welsh Harlequin

Listed as a critically endangered species by The Livestock Conservancy, the Welsh Harlequin, which hails from Wales, is another lightweight duck breed that produces remarkable amounts, often yielding more than 300 white eggs each year. Known for their practicality around the farm, this heritage breed can be raised for meat and because hens are broody, they can also help you to raise ducklings. Welsh Harlequins are among duck breeds that can be raised for meat.

Barrows Goldeneye

Barrows Goldeneye has a puffy, oval-shaped, purplish head, with a crescent-shaped white patch between their black triangular bill and yellow/golden eyes. Their neck and body are mostly white, and their back and wings are black with a row of white spots along the wing. They also have yellowish feet. The female Barrow’s Goldeneye has a dark brown head with a whitish collar. The back and sides are gray and the chest, breast, and belly are white. The bill is orangish with a blackish nasal area and tip. Barrow’s Goldeneye gets up to about 19 inches long and weighs about 2.1 pounds. These ducks are diver ducks that mainly feed on small fish, crustaceans, and aquatic insects. Their population size is smaller than most, ranging from around 150,000 to 200,000 individuals.

Runner Duck

The oldest of the six duck breeds listed here, the Runner—sometimes called the Indian Runner—is another highly productive layer, producing as many as 300 chicken size eggs per year. Like the Campbell, the Runner is categorized as “lightweight” by the American Poultry Association, the category most often associated with stellar egg producers. Runners are voracious foragers. Historically, the ducks were used in Chinese rice patties to gather weeds, snails, insects and even small reptiles, so don’t be surprised if your ducks uncover an array of “treats” from around your farm. They will likely forage a large area and are very active, so be sure to provide them plenty of space.

Dutch Hookbill

These are truly unique looking ducks. Their body has a distinct S-shape from neck to breast and then has a deep sweeping curve from the breast to the leg and another to its tail. But their body shape is not their only defining character. They have a long-curved bill that was said to have made it easier for hunters to distinguish between them and a wild duck in the Dutch waterways.

They have quite a hard history as they were sent to fend for themselves in the Dutch waterways and canals. They are a very old breed of duck that’s numbers have so drastically declined that it is now on the many a wildfowl conservation list as critically endangered.

AYLESBURY DUCK

The Aylesbury duck is a very old breed of duck and was a very popular dual-purpose duck in the 1800’s. It was prized for its white skin, white feathers which make it easy to pluck, great egg production and tasty tender meat.

These pure white ducks have yellow legs and feet and an unusual light pink bill. They are known as a superior meat breed and young that mature rapidly. A young male can reach their mature weight at around seven to nine weeks of age.

Ayelsbury ducks are critically endangered and in need of more breeders to take an interest in getting this breeds conservation status back to normal acceptable levels of ducks.

The Ruddy Duck

This is an unusual yet beautiful duck breed that has features that many other breeds do not. First, their long, bright blue bills stand out from all their other features. Second, their tails stick up in the air instead of lying flat behind the back. These are small ducks with compact bodies and big round eyes. Their bodies are light to dark brown, and their heads are black and white.

Ruddy Ducks do not fly much, but they are expert gliders in the water. After mating, the females lay large white eggs that have a pebble-like texture to them. These ducks are known for being aggressive and sometimes attack other animals or even those of their own species at times.

Smew Duck

The smew duck (Mergellus albellus) is another species of merganser found in Europe and Asia. The males are unmistakable in their snow-white plumage with black accents on the wings and chest. They have black, pandalike eye markings and a streak of black along the tops of their heads. They can be found nesting in the taiga of Europe and Asia, taking advantage of crevices in trees, such as woodpecker holes, to raise their young. Some of these birds visit the Aleutian Islands, in Alaska, every year; most prefer to overwinter freshwater sites in slightly more temperate areas.
