Superior sits on US-60 an hour east of Phoenix, one main street under a thousand-foot wall of stone. When the mine went quiet, the town nearly emptied out.

Little-known: the storefronts still open on Main Street are the scoreboard for who stayed. Rose's Roses Flowers, Gifts and Printing is one of them, at 203 W. Main.

When to go: golden hour, when the wall lights up red over Main Street.
How: US-60 east from the Valley, about an hour. Park on Main and walk it.
Respect: it's a working town, not a set. Buy something while you're there.

Two pieces, two artists, two completely different beadwork patterns. Handmade by tribal artists and certified as such — the certificate names who made it.

Art you're supposed to actually use.

Lisa Howe's line is stoneware meant to be used, not displayed. Thirty-five years at the wheel in Sedona, and every firing comes out a little different — no two dishes in this basket match.

Stoneware is fired hot enough to vitrify, which is why it can go in the dishwasher and outlast most of the kitchen.

This is not a filter. The wrap art is built to catch light, and in Arizona sun it goes full stained-glass — which is the reason people pick these up and then don't put them down.

We shoot these outside on purpose. In a lightbox the finish looks flat and the whole point disappears.

All single-color black on light cotton. Three completely different arguments about what Arizona looks like, printed the exact same way.

One-color prints cost less to run, which is the entire reason small shops can put out designs like these at all.

HOW TO GET THERE
From Phoenix, take US-60 east about 90 miles through Superior and the Queen Creek Tunnel. Roughly an hour and forty-five minutes. Globe sits where US-60 meets US-70.

TIPS
Park anywhere on Broad Street and walk it. The historic Gila County Courthouse is now the Cobre Valley Center for the Arts. The old jail opens as a museum the second Saturday of the month. Summer runs hot down in town, so head up into the Pinal Mountains for about ten degrees of relief.

DID YOU KNOW?
Globe got its name from a chunk of near-pure silver pulled out of these hills, round as the world itself. Rose Mofford, who grew up to run the whole state, was born here. And Sleeping Beauty Mountain just outside town produced some of the most famous sky-blue turquoise anywhere.

Several designs, stuck to a real tailgate outside the shop — the shield with the charms, the Mother Road badge, and the Wigwam Motel in neon. The cheapest souvenir in the shop and the one people come back for in threes.

Magnets are the most common souvenir purchase in the country, ahead of shirts and postcards.
