🌿 LEUCOPHYLLUM: A PHOENIX LANDSCAPE FAVORITE! 🌵

If you live in Phoenix, chances are you’ve seen a Leucophyllum—better known as Texas Ranger, Texas Sage, or Cenizo. These tough desert shrubs are some of the best choices for low-water Arizona landscapes.

☀️ Why they thrive here: • Extremely heat and drought tolerant once established
• Handle our intense Phoenix sun beautifully
• Evergreen to semi-evergreen depending on weather and conditions
• Naturally dense, making them excellent for screens and hedges
• Beautiful foliage adds contrast to landscapes
• Produces spectacular purple, pink, or lavender flowers

🌧️ And here’s the cool part: Leucophyllums often bloom after summer humidity, monsoon moisture, or significant changes in atmospheric pressure. That’s why you’ll sometimes see a desert landscape suddenly covered in purple flowers seemingly overnight!

🌱 Phoenix planting tip: Leucophyllums prefer well-draining soil and infrequent, deep watering. One of the biggest mistakes is watering them too frequently. Once established, they’re remarkably tolerant of our hot, dry conditions.

Thinking of planting some Ficus / Indian laurel (Ficus Nitida) for a privacy hedge? WAIT!! READ THIS FIRST!!

While they grow fast and look lush, here's why they might not be the best long-term choice:

🌘There is a big problem with nurseries and landscapers alike that will tell you that a column ficus is different from a tree ficus. THEY ARE THE SAME THING!!

I REPEAT, THE SAME THING!!

🤔High Maintenance - These trees grow aggressively and need constant trimming to stay tidy. They want to grow beyond 50 feet so trying to keep that under control can be quite the task.

💥 Aggressive Roots - Their roots can invade irrigation lines, lift sidewalks, affect pools, and damage walls Not to mention, they can also grow a trunk 2 feet or more in diameter.

🥶 Cold & Heat Sensitive - They struggle with both Arizona freezes and extreme heat without protection. They are also NOT drought tolerant Better hope the water system works properly at all times.

For a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant, and pest-resistant hedge, there are better options out there. Swipe to see a whole bunch of great options for hedges on slide no. 9. Small to large, Sun and shade.
