Paradiso 17 is a sweeping story of Sufien, a character based loosely on Assadi’s father. The 1948 Nakba uproots Sufien’s home and sets him on a serpentine path that concludes in the Arizona desert. 🇵🇸 🏜️

Assadi will join us at Palabras Bookstore in Downtown Phoenix on the evening of October 3rd. She will talk about how her book came to be, read from its pages, and answer questions.

The event is free. Books will be available to purchase at this event.

Hi! chawa here 👋 I’m taking this week to care for the garden spaces at casa caracol • aka • snail house 🐌🏡 and care for myself too. 💚

On a personal note, this little jardín has always been a dream of mine, even from the moments that I endlessly envisioned a place stocked with these powerful liberating tools called books, a place full of folks sharing, inspiring and carrying for one another.. I always thought of the land as a part of this space because plants have always been a part of how I think, breathe and move. And that has helped me a lot in how I try to live. For that, I can thank mí mamá who grew up living off the land in Santa María Transpontina Jalisco and passed some of this way of being to me when she talked to bees and trees and planted flowers & chilis.

Thank you to everyone who helped so far with this project. As we breathe it into existence it breathes back, an endless exchange without thought that teaches us how to do more than coexist, it reminds us who we are, while moving in a relentless machine always trying to make us forget.

Let’s be like the mycelial mansions beneath our soles, palatial space where riches (nutrients) are shared and life is renewed in cycles of care. 🍄 🐌 🌼

See you Sunday, our next garden build day!🪴

Us here Palabras Bilingual Bookstore had a blast in Schaumburg @ children’s institute hosted by American Booksellers Assoc. & exploring the lovely city of Chicago.

We saw authors we love, explored bookstores, the sights sounds & tastes of Chicago, saw the largest convening of Pokémon go in Schaumburg & we even got a parking ticket like a real deal Chicagoan!

It was a blast! But we’re back AND OPEN for the “holiday” weekend so if you’re feeling like chilling in a cool space with us and enjoying the return of our salted plum soda! Come on over! 🥤 ☺️ 📚 🤓 💗
