The conversation around Marvel scaling back some Black-led movies, TV shows, and comic titles has gotten way more hostile than it needs to be.
I’ve seen the backlash against the CEO of Impound Comics for saying indie creators can be an alternative when mainstream companies let readers of color down. Looking at it from an indie creator’s perspective, I understand exactly what he was saying. Independent creators have always stepped up to tell stories that bigger publishers wouldn’t.
If you’re coming from the consumer side, I understand that too. People are frustrated because they don’t want to lose characters and stories they’ve invested in. That’s a valid feeling.
But we can have both conversations without the name-calling, insults, and mudslinging.
At the end of the day, most of us want the same thing: great characters, great stories, and heroes that reflect the communities reading them. There’s room for Marvel, DC, and independent comics to all succeed.
Let’s spend less time attacking each other and more time supporting the stories we want to see.
It’s your boy, Lo. Dark City Comics and Multimedia.
