This is a great piece of bicycle racing history that's been lost to history! ​

This is Mateo Trentin of Italy riding Paris-Roubaix in 2019. Trentin is holder of the Ruban Jaune award, which he received for setting an old cycling record in a very different race from Paris.

The Ruban Jaune, or Yellow Ribbon, was one of professional cycling’s most evocative honours. Created in 1936 by Tour de France founder Henri Desgrange, it was inspired by the Blue Riband awarded for the fastest Atlantic crossing by a passenger liner.

Desgrange substituted cycling’s colour, which of course is yellow, and awarded the distinction to the rider who achieved the fastest average speed in a major single-day professional road race of more than 200 kilometres.

Unlike a championship, it wasn’t awarded every year. A rider held the Ruban Jaune until somebody went faster, but its history became closely associated with Paris-Tours.

The relatively flat course of that race, and potential for favourable winds, made Paris-Tour cycling’s great high-speed classic. The first holder of the Ruban Jaune was Belgian Gustave Danneels, winner of Paris-Tours in 1936. Jules Rossi raised the record to 42.092 kph in the same race two years later.

Other classics occasionally got a look in. Rik Van Steenbergen averaged 43.612 kph to win Paris-Roubaix in 1948, while another Roubaix winner, Peter Post, did so at 45.129 kph in 1964. Freddy Maertens then averaged 46.110 kph in Paris-Brussels in 1975, and that record survived for 22 years.

Then Paris-Tours reclaimed the Ruban Jaune and never relinquished it. Andrei Tchmil averaged 47.168 kph winning in 1997, followed by Erik Zabel at 47.550 in 2003 and Óscar Freire at 47.729 in 2010.

Races became dramatically faster after that. Marco Marcato won Paris-Tours in 2012 at 48.629 kph, before Matteo Trentin produced the fastest Ruban Jaune ride of the single-day-race era in 2015. He covered the 231 kilometres between Paris and Tours in 4 hours 39 minutes 12 seconds, averaging an extraordinary 49.641 kph.

The Ruban Jaune is a wonderfully simple accolade from another age of cycling that answers a simple question- who over a proper race distance, could win with the fastest average speed ever ridden?
