🍂🍁🌳 Elevation Timeline for 2026
Peak colors roll down the mountains by elevation, starting above 4,000 feet in early-to-mid October and moving to lower valleys by late October into early November.
Late September – Early October (High Elevations, 4,000+ feet): Color begins showing on high peaks like Kuwohi (formerly Clingmans Dome) and Newfound Gap. Partial and patchy colors are expected in the Smokies.
Mid-October (Mid-Elevations): The color spreads to middle slopes and trails like Elkmont and portions of Newfound Gap Road.
Week of Oct 12: This might be the time to visit the Smoky Mountains or to plan your day trips. The higher elevations of the Smokies will reach “near peak” colors.
Week of Oct. 19: Radiant reds, opulent oranges and brilliant browns will blanket the Great Smoky Mountains during mid-October!
Late October – Early November (Lower Valleys): Valleys and lower areas like Cades Cove and Oconaluftee reach their vibrant conclusion.
Week of Nov. 9: Fall leaves across most of the state are expected to turn dull and pass their peak by the second week of November.
Best Viewing Spots by Season:
Early Season (High Country): Kuwohi, Newfound Gap, Andrews Bald.
Mid-Season (Mid Elevations): Little River Trail at Elkmont, Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail.
Late Season (Valleys): Cades Cove, Deep Creek.
