Born in 1914 in Hutton, Illinois, Hurshel was raised in a family of eleven children, where resilience, hard work, and a love for the outdoors were second nature. As a young man, he followed his adventurous heart, moving to Florida in the 1960s, where he built a business and embraced a life of exploration. When Hurshel and his family settled in Tennessee, he found his true home in the Great Smoky Mountains. The misty ridges, winding trails, and endless beauty of the Smokies reflected everything he loved about the outdoors—a place of adventure, reflection, and discovery.
