🎣 IF YOU FIND THE BLUEGILL… PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT’S LURKING AROUND THEM.

Seeing a bunch of bluegill up shallow might not seem all that exciting when you’re looking for bass.

But sometimes those little fish are telling you exactly where you need to be.

Bass are predators, and bluegill are absolutely on the menu.

When bluegill are concentrated around shallow cover or spawning areas, don’t just cast right into the middle of them.

Look around the OUTSIDE.

Pay attention to:

-The first drop into deeper water
- Grass edges nearby
- Shade or docks close to the area
-Isolated pieces of cover
-Any obvious escape route into deeper water

A bigger bass may not be sitting right in the middle of all those bluegill.

It can hang just outside the activity waiting for one to make a bad decision.

That’s also a pretty damn good clue about what your bait should look like.

If the lake is showing you what the bass have available to eat…

MATCH IT.

You don’t always have to guess what they want.

Sometimes what a bass wants is swimming right in front of you.

Who else gets a little more interested in an area when you start seeing bluegill everywhere? 👇

🎣 Your FIRST cast at a spot might be your most important one.

Ever pull up to a good-looking piece of cover, make a sloppy cast… then immediately think:

“Damn. That’s not where I wanted that to go.”

That might’ve actually hurt you more than you realize...

When you approach a laydown, dock, grass edge or other piece of cover, there could already be a bass sitting in the highest-percentage spot.

A bad cast, trolling motor noise, banging around in the boat, or dragging a bait through the wrong area can put that fish on alert before your bait ever gets in front of it.

So before you start firing casts everywhere, take a second.

Look at the cover.

Think about where the shade is.

Look for the easiest ambush point.

Then make your BEST cast you can.

You can always pick the rest of the area apart afterward to see if there’s something else lurking around.

Sometimes catching that fish isn’t about finding the perfect color or throwing some magical bait.

It’s just about putting a bait in front of an unsuspecting bass before you let him know you’re there.

What are you hitting first?? shade, deepest cover, or the outside edge? 👇

🎣 Ever wonder why a bass follows your bait all the way to the boat… and just WON’T eat it?

It’s one of the most frustrating things in bass fishing!

You see that fish tracking your swimbait, you’re waiting for it to absolutely hammer it… and then it turns away like it never cared.

A lot of times, that fish IS interested, something just didn’t convince it to commit.

That’s when a small change can make a big difference.

If you see a follower, try changing speed. Give the bait a quick burst, make it dart, or kill it completely and let it fall.

That sudden change can make the bait look like it’s trying to escape or like an easy meal just gave up.

But before you immediately change baits, change what the bait is doing.

Anybody else have a bass follow a bait ALL the way back just to turn around at the last second? 👇

🎣 Your bait might not be the problem. Your retrieve might be.

One of the easiest mistakes to make when bass aren’t biting is immediately changing colors, changing baits, changing spots… basically changing everything.

Before you do that, change your retrieve.

If you’re throwing a soft plastic, try working the SAME bait a few different ways:

👉 Slow it way down and let it sit longer than feels necessary.
👉 Give it a couple sharp pops and let it fall.
👉 Swim it just above the bottom.
👉 Burn it for a few feet, kill it, and let it drop.

Sometimes the bass already like what you’re throwing, they just don’t like what you’re doing with it.

Water temperature, pressure, forage and how active the fish are can completely change how they want a bait presented.

I’ve seen bass want something super slow and finesse and then others want it fast and erratic.

Before you cut off a bait you KNOW catches fish, change how you’re fishing it.

What’s your go to move when the bite gets tough… slow WAY down or start fishing faster?

Three years ago today… Hook’R Baits officially got on the board. 🎣

This was the first bass I ever caught on a bait I made myself. Looking back at this picture now is pretty damn cool.

At the time, I was just trying to figure out how to make a bait that a bass would actually eat. I was learning colors, plastic, pouring, molds, action… pretty much everything through trial and error.

Fast forward three years and a LOT has changed.

The baits have gotten better.
The equipment has gotten better.
The selection has grown.
And somewhere along the way, Hook’R Baits went from me screwing around making fishing baits to a real, scalable business with its own website, products, customers, events, merch, and a whole lot more planned.

And I’m still learning.

There are bigger bait companies. There are guys who have been doing this a hell of a lot longer than I have. But every once in a while it’s good to look back at where you started and realize just how far you’ve actually come.

It all started with one homemade purple worm and one bass dumb enough to eat it. 😂

August 26, 2023… Hook’R Baits was officially on the board.

Three years later, we’re just getting started. 🤘🎣
