Australia’s most famous bananas were once allegedly held for ransom by the Russian mafia.
It sounds completely made up, but according to Kenneth Radley, who played B1 for more than a decade, the original Bananas in Pyjamas costumes were once stolen during a promotional trip to Moscow in the 1990s. The thieves allegedly demanded a ransom of $100,000 to return B1 and B2.
The ABC wasn’t interested in paying that much. They reportedly worked out it would only cost about $20,000 to make brand new suits, so they sent that amount instead. Grahame Grassby, who was looking after the costumes, was apparently on his way to meet the people demanding the ransom when he stopped, thought, “What am I doing?”, turned around, went straight to the airport, and flew back to Australia with the money.
The original Bananas were never seen again.
So somewhere, if the story is true, B1 and B2 may still be sitting in a warehouse, basement or storage shed somewhere in Russia, making this one of the strangest stories in Australian television history.
Only in the 90s could an innocent ABC kids’ show somehow end up in an international standoff involving the Russian mafia.
Had you ever heard this story before today, or is this the most random piece of Aussie TV trivia you’ve ever come across?

Commodore is officially launching the Callback 8020, a $500 Linux-based flip phone designed to block social media and web browsers at the system level. This privacy-first clamshell device comes pre-loaded with classic Commodore 64 games and Snake to keep you entertained without the doomscrolling. While it works with 99% of Android apps, the goal is to sideline the attention economy so you can finally own a phone that minds its own business.
