It’s a good day to be in class! The wind is blowing outside in Estes Park, but inside we’re cozy, learning, and having fun. Today’s first Wool Market workshop is Exploring the Drum Carder, and we’re excited to dive into the art and process of preparing wool. Looking forward to a great day of fiber, learning, and creativity!

If soft, springy fleeces are your favorite, this workshop is for you.

Fine wool breeds are loved for their softness, bounce, and beautiful finished yarns—but those same qualities can make them challenging to card. In our Breed Sampler: Fine Wools workshop, you'll get hands-on experience working with a variety of fine wool breeds while learning how to avoid common carding frustrations, which breeds tend to be the most challenging, and when a substitute breed can help you achieve similar results.

Each student works on their own electric Elite Crankless drum carder, and all materials, carders, and tools are provided.

Join us this year at:
Black Sheep Gathering (Oregon) – June - DFW Fiber Fest (Texas) – August - Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival (Wisconsin) – September

Bouncy fleece. Squishy fleece. Soft fleece. Come discover how to get the most out of these beautiful fibers.

Ever wonder what actually happens inside a drum carder?

Join us for Exploring the Drum Carder, a hands-on workshop that takes the mystery out of one of the most useful tools in fiber preparation. We'll start the day by exploring the history of drum carders, how they work, and why they're designed the way they are.

Then it's time to get hands-on! Throughout the day, you'll learn the differences between woolen and worsted carding, explore tools and techniques that make fiber preparation more efficient, and create four unique batts. You'll even experience the difference between hand cranking and electric drive, creating your first batt by hand before switching to Electric Drive for the remainder of the class.

Whether you're new to drum carding or looking to deepen your understanding of the process, you'll leave with a better understanding of how your carder works and new ideas for preparing fiber.
All materials, carders, and tools are provided by us—just bring your curiosity and get ready to card!

We're hitting the road this summer and fall with hands-on workshops from coast to coast. Our next workshops begin in June in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and continue through the end of October in North Carolina. We provide all the equipment, so you can focus on learning, experimenting, and creating.

Register now for hands-on, in-person training designed to build confidence, expand your skills, and inspire creativity.

Many fiber artists think of a drum carder primarily as a tool for making batts, but its capabilities extend far beyond that. A drum carder is a remarkably versatile fiber preparation tool, capable of producing multiple styles of both woolen and semi-worsted preparations.

By changing techniques and approaches, a single handful of fleece can be transformed into several distinct preparations, each influencing the spinning process and the characteristics of the finished yarn. Understanding these different preparations allows spinners to better control loft, alignment, texture, and ultimately the performance of their yarn.

Exploring the full range of what a drum carder can do not only expands creative possibilities but also helps fiber artists make the most of the fleece and fibers they work with. Whether preparing fiber for airy woolen yarns, more organized semi-worsted spinning, or custom blends, the drum carder can be adapted to suit a wide variety of goals.

The more familiar you become with your drum carder, the more it reveals itself as an essential fiber preparation tool rather than simply a batt maker. With a little experimentation, it can open the door to new techniques, new yarns, and new ways of approaching the spinning process.

We'll be teaching Getting the Most Out of Your Drum Carder at Estes Park Wool Market this year, but if you can't make it to Colorado or weren't able to snag a seat in the sold-out class, our Fall 2025 Spin Off article is an excellent resource. Inside, you'll find many of the same ideas and techniques we share in class, helping fiber artists move beyond basic batts and unlock the full potential of their drum carders.
