Doing something different... but important.
We had the privilege of meeting a man from Uganda who came to our home and sat around our fire pit with us. He came to the US years ago and got a degree in Psychology and planned on staying here. But he said he felt God was calling him back home so he listened.
He told us that, in Uganda, girls are considered almost useless to a family. They are burdens and, when they reach ages around 10 or 11 years old, they are sold off to grown men who want to buy them. It's illegal but he says the government doesn't do anything about it. But they allow him to.
On his own dollar, he has saved and houses 75 rescued children with his staff of 15. He teaches there and uses his own money to house, feed and teach all of these children. Recently he has bought an acre of land and planted beans in hopes that will help feed them as they only eat once per day. Some of these girls are planning and getting ready to go to college, some to be nurses, one a doctor and another a lawyer.
Another issue there is that he said sanitary products for young girls costs around $8 per month. But a father can feed a family of 10 for that much. So they choose to feed the 10 and the girls drop out of school around the age of needing such products. This man has developed a washable, reusable sanitary product for these girls. And he's hired young prostitutes (if I understand correctly) to stop prostitution and sew these items for him. This also teaches them the skill of sewing so that, even if they leave him, they now have a skill and maybe wont return to the street.
He said that it takes $1000, US money, to feed the 75 girls and his staff of 15 for a month. $1000 to feed 90 people for a month. He admitted later on in the evening that his own funds were drained pretty low and that he was looking for help because he is in the process of building his own school there and the government has given him a deadline for completion of the first floor. He came to the US to look for anyone who could send any small amount to help him feed these girls and so that he can continue to rescue them from the grown men who buy them.
IF any of you would like to contribute in any way, let us know. Send us a message and we will show you how to look at his information. Thank you so much for your time reading this long post.
