I think this zucchini grew weirdly because it’s round and cute compared to normal zucchinis. It’s actually called The Round Zucchini, and it’s supposed to grow this way. I would’ve never known this is a zucchini; it looks similar to a small watermelon!

Round zucchinis usually grow to the size of 3-4 inches in diameter. They also only take around a week to go from blossom to fruit! I think the small size and round shape of this zucchini will make a great plant to grow for beginner gardeners or indoors.

One thing I can’t wait to try once these zucchinis are ripe enough is to stuff them. Maybe I could try stuffing it with ground beef or pork mixed with diced peppers, onions, tomatoes, and zucchini. Then, top it off baked with melted cheese. Yum!

Because summer is almost here, I want to welcome the season with colorful, vibrant summer fruits! One of my favorite ways to enjoy the hot season is to grow Yellow Straightneck Squash.

They can grow multiple fruits in a bushel and each fruit can grow up to 8 inches. Therefore, once it’s harvested, there’ll be plenty of squash to go around! I can invite the whole family over and enjoy squash together.

Annually, I harvest them to roast or bread and deep fry. They have at nutty and buttery taste and are very refreshing. In my opinion, the best way to serve this squash is to deep fry it and have it with vanilla ice cream!

Did you know that the popular cucuzza squash has strong historical ties to Italian cuisine? I learned that it’s popular for Italian-Americans to grow Cucuzza in their backyard, especially around the summer season. And it’s even more popular back in Italy or around the Mediterranean area. It is a traditional Italian crop that has been farmed for centuries for its massive size.

I remember having this squash along with other dishes when I was dining in Little Italy, New York City. It compliments many dishes well because of its light and refreshing flavor, depending on how you prepare it. Many people prefer to serve it with pasta and many others prefer to fry or grill them. There are infinite ways to have Cucuzza!

Cucuzza originated from Africa then to southern Italy, in Sicily. However, other southern European and Northern African cultures also share tradition in enjoying Cucuzza. It is rare to find Cucuzza in the United States, and I think that growing your own in your backyard is wonderful!

I was surprised to find out that these belong to the family of summer squashes. At first, I didn’t know what these were; it looks like decor and something inedible. I learned that these cute  fruits are called patty pans.

As it turns out, patty pans are close cousins to zucchinis and cucumbers. They are a type of summer squash that has a flare of its own, a cute and distinct shape! Another name for these is the Tulip Squash— a fitting name.

The most common way to prepare patty pans is to cut and sauté them in lemon, garlic herbs, and maybe cheese. I heard that they compliment protein well. Once I grow the patty pan seeds out, I will have to try it!

I introduce to you: The Moneymaker Tomato. It has a grand name for a grand, long lasting tomato. This tomato lives up to its name because it was and still is a staple crop for English farmers.

In the past, this tomato was heavily farmed as it’s very resilient to weather conditions. It has high heat and humidity tolerance, making it easy to grow. Further, they grow in clusters on vines, giving farmers plenty to sell. For beginner gardeners, I suggest the Moneymaker Tomato as one of their first plants.

When I first started growing this tomato, I was excited to see the smallest bud sprout; the seeds germinated a bit slower than other seeds. However, in the blink of an eye, I had a whole vine of tomatoes!

These golden tomatoes have just the perfect name: The Golden Jubilee Tomato. To be jubilee is to be joyous and festive. What better name for these bright and cheery tomatoes.

Only a few have started to ripen and turn a vibrant yellow. However, all of them will soon become like this one I picked. It’s almost time for tomato season, and these will be the most ripe tomatoes when it’s time to harvest!

To celebrate the end of tomato season, pick a full batch of jubilee tomatoes. They're great in tomato salads or even to try as golden pasta sauce! In my opinion, they're similar to normal tomatoes but add a touch of color to the garden.

Beefsteak tomatoes are the king of all tomatoes. Did you know that they live up to their name “beefsteak” as these tomatoes can grow up to two pounds? They are “meaty”, meaning very juicy and hefty. You would not expect a small pip to grow into such a massive tomato.

In addition to their mighty size, Beefsteak tomatoes come in a variety of colors: red, orange, yellow, green, or even blue and purple! This is a rarity because blue and purple does not often naturally appear in the wild. The range of color is what makes mother nature charmful.

When I heard about beefsteak tomatoes, I knew that I had to have them in my garden. I can imagine cutting a fresh slice of the tomato and adding them to a sandwich or burger. I think they will enhance not only the dining experience but the cooking experience as well.

San Marzano Tomato 🤌 🇮🇹

This weekend, I am planning to repot the seedlings I have been growing in my home. I cannot wait to see how my San Marzano Tomatoes will grow in a more open area. This is how I envision the garden would look when the tomato vines reach a few feet in height.

Did you know that most supermarkets sell the Globe Tomato as the standard tomato? I would describe the flavor of San Marzano tomatoes as sweet and less acidic. The subtle difference in flavor is difficult to replicate. Furthermore, they’re harder to find in stores.

I think that growing San Marzano tomatoes is convenient— I could walk a few feet and grab some from my yard! The seeds are cheaper than buying and having the fruits delivered. Once I have a bite of these delicious, juicy, crisp tomatoes, I know that they’ll be a staple in my garden for years to come.

I always check if yellow plum grape tomato seeds are available because they keep selling out. I’m not surprised that they sell out; they’re sweeter versions of cherry tomatoes, and I love cherry tomatoes. The fresh, vibrant yellow color adds a colorful touch to the greenery in my garden.

I only wanted to pick a few to enjoy, but I helped myself to a large batch instead. This pile is the result of today’s harvest. The crisp crunch of the first bite is something I look forward to if I get the chance to buy these seeds!

Another way I like to enjoy them is to roast them. I slice them into halves or quarters then onto a skillet to be cooked. Roasted plum grape tomatoes go well with roasted cherry tomatoes. I can already envision the taste of roasted sweetness.

These are more pictures from the tomato harvest. I am surprised that there were so many tomatoes that grew from the seeds. I never expected my small setup would mean fresh batches of fully ripe fruits!

Last night, I made some roasted tomatoes; I enjoy having my tomatoes hot and cooked instead of cold and crisp. They tasted tangy sweet, just delicious. I can’t wait to make more tonight because just thinking about them is working up my appetitie.

I want to try making a variety of tomato dishes in the future, and one of them is a traditional Chinese dish that I saw was very popular. You simply cook tomatoes with scrambled eggs in salt, pepper, and garlic. After that, maybe I will try making ketchup or ketchup leather!
