Took a Sunday morning ride up to the card show in Slippery Rock πŸš—

The room was mostly modern and PokΓ©mon, but we did some digging and came home with vintage we never expected to find:

⚾ 1950 R423 orange-back strips. The long one has Stan Musial AND Ted Williams, plus Joe Gordon, Herb Pennock, Ralph Branca and more. The short strip brings Lefty Grove, Rogers Hornsby, Hal Newhouser and Lefty O'Doul.

⚾ 1914 Piedmont Art Stamp of former Pirate Tommy Leach, pictured here with the Cubs. Over 110 years old and that green background still pops.

⚾ Sportscaster "The 3,000-Hit Club" card featuring Pittsburgh's #21 πŸ–€πŸ’›

πŸ“š And the books:
β€’ 1948 Who's Who in Baseball (33rd edition), with Ralph Kiner and Johnny Mize, the "Home Run Twins of 1947," on the cover. Cover price: 30Β’
β€’ 1948 Dell Major League Baseball, with Ted Williams on the front as 1947 Player of the Year. Flip it over and there's Doris Sams, 1947 Player of the Year for the All American Girls Baseball League. Inside are stats and photos from the AAGBL. Cover price: 25Β’
β€’ 100 Years of National League Baseball 1876–1976 from The Sporting News, with Cy Young, Cap Anson and Branch Rickey on the cover

Lesson learned: always dig. You never know what's sitting on the next table.

What's the best vintage find you've pulled from a mostly-modern show? πŸ‘‡

Spent this week in Denver and made time to hit a few local card shops while I was out there. Didn't find a ton, but that's part of the fun β€” you never know what's gonna be in the case.

Of course, I can't help myself when I'm out of town... always digging for Pittsburgh:

πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ 1959 Topps Roy Face
πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ 1959 Topps Bill Virdon
πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ 1959 Topps Dick Groat
πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ 1959 Topps Vern Law
πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ 1959 Topps "Buc Hill Aces" combo (Kline-Friend-Law-Face)
πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ Topps Chrome Konnor Griffin RC

Picked up a few non-Pittsburgh pieces too that were too good to pass on β€” a 1959 Topps Minnie Minoso and the 1959 Topps "Keystone Combo" Fox-Aparicio, plus an Ed Mathews card.

There's something about card shopping in a new city β€” different inventory, different vibe, but that same rush when something catches your eye in the case. Always worth the stop.

Took in a ballgame today at UPMC Park β€” Erie SeaWolves vs. the Somerset Patriots.

Five rows back from first base for twenty bucks a ticket. Can't beat that.

Nothing like a good day at the ballpark.

When the park's closed, the shop's open πŸƒ

In Erie for the weekend β€” the plan was Presque Isle and some kayaking, but the park's closed due to storm damage from earlier this week. So what else is there to do but head to Kinems Sports Cards, where Mike gave us a great deal on these?

Walked out with some serious heat:

πŸ”΅ 1958 Topps Sport Magazine All-Star Selection β€” Willie Mays
πŸ”΄ 1958 Topps Sport Magazine All-Star Selection β€” Hank Aaron
⚾️ 2018 Topps Update Shohei Ohtani RC ( ) β€” PSA 8 NM-MT

Two legends from the same '58 All-Star subset, plus a graded Ohtani rookie to round it out. That's a banger of a stop when the beach is a no-go.

Shoutout to Mike at Kinem's for a great stop. Always good to find the good shops on the road.

Two shows, two totally different energies this week. πŸŽŸοΈπŸƒ

Thursday we were at the World's Fair of Money at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center β€” incredible material on the floor, no doubt. But the vibe felt more dealer-to-dealer than dealer-to-collector. A lot of tables were closed off, deep in conversation with each other, not much interest in engaging with the people walking the floor.

Saturday we hit the Pittsburgh Card Show at the mall in Robinson, and it was night and day. This felt like a collector's show β€” dealers looking up, striking up conversations, willing to talk shop and work out a deal with the people actually there to build their collections.

Big national shows will always have the volume and the rare finds. But there's something about a show built around collectors, not just the trade, that reminds you why this hobby is fun in the first place. 🧒

Wrapping up the week with a stop at the Pittsburgh Card Show at Robinson Mall β€” only walked away with one card, but it was a banger.

1974 Laughlin Old-Time Black Stars #8 β€” Josh Gibson

If you know Pittsburgh baseball history, you know the name. Gibson caught for the Homestead Grays and Pittsburgh Crawfords and was regarded as the top power hitter in the Negro National League through the '30s and '40s. Some accounts credit him with an unobstructed 580–700 foot shot at Yankee Stadium and single-season homer totals as high as 89. He passed away in 1947 at just 36, before he ever got the chance at the Majors β€” and was later elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Cards like this are why we love this hobby β€” one piece can hold this much history.
