StoryTime can be more than reading a book together. It can create a natural space for children to explore feelings, choices, and experiences through play.

You don't need a perfect script or a long conversation. Start small:

Pick a Pal. Let your child choose.
Read the story. Let them enjoy it without turning it into a lesson.
Ask one question. Give them space to think and respond.
Let them play it out. Follow their lead.

They might talk about the character. They might connect it to something they've experienced. Or they might simply enjoy the story with you.

There isn't one right way to do StoryTime.

Sometimes, the most meaningful conversations happen when we're simply making space for them.

"Talking about feelings doesn’t always have to start with, “What’s wrong?”

Sometimes, it can start with a story.

When children talk about a character like Fern, they can explore questions about feelings, choices, and experiences without having to immediately talk about themselves.

Try asking:

How do you think Fern feels?
What do you think she should do?
Have you ever felt that way?

Stories can create a little distance between a child and the emotion, making it feel safer and easier to explore.

And sometimes, that’s where the conversation begins."

“Calm down” can be hard for a child to hear when they’re already overwhelmed.

In those moments, they may not need us to make the feeling disappear. They may need connection, reassurance, and a little space to work through it.

Try:
💛 I can see you're having a hard time.
💛 That felt really big for you.
💛 I'm right here. Take your time.

Children are still learning how to recognize, name, express, and regulate their emotions. These are skills they build over time through practice and support.

Sometimes, connection comes first. Regulation can come next.

Sometimes what looks like a “big reaction” is a child trying to communicate a big feeling.

Frustration, disappointment, excitement, change, or overwhelm can feel much bigger to a child who is still learning how to recognize and express what’s happening inside.

Instead of only asking, “How do I make this stop?” try getting curious about what might be underneath the reaction.

What is my child trying to communicate?

Sometimes, regulation doesn't start with fixing the feeling. It starts with connection.

September asked a great deal of little people. New rooms, new names to learn, and a schedule none of them chose.

It also closed something here. The thirteenth and final book went onto the shelf this month, and the series is complete.

Inner World for what happens inside a child. Outer World for what happens between a child and everybody else. Legacy for what they carry forward.

The Second House closes it. Petal and Pip were always going to be last, because self-forgiveness is the skill that everything else eventually asks for.

National Sons Day.

To the boys learning that strong and soft belong in the same person, and to the parents doing the patient work of teaching it against a great deal of noise saying otherwise.

Naming a feeling is not the opposite of being brave. It is most of it.

Your child has broken something and is now inconsolable, and it is clear the object is not the problem.

Three things that help, none of which are it is okay.

Name the fact. You broke it, and it cannot be unbroken.
Offer the job. Here is what fixing it looks like.
Stay in the room while they do it.

Reassurance ends the conversation. Repair ends the feeling.

National Daughters Day. This one is for my girl, Harper.

Everything here began with a wish for her, that she would be equipped. That on the days which are hard, and there are always some, she would already have the words for what she was feeling and something to do with them.

It turned out not to be a wish specific to her. Every child deserves to meet a difficult day already holding something.

To the girls who feel everything at once, who read the room before anybody speaks, who apologize twice for something that required someone else's apology: you are not too much. You are early to something most people learn late.
