Capturing video of a fishing trip and posting it has to be one of the worst and best things I do. Throwing yourself into the unknown and slowly learning all the things one needs to do is daunting. Learning something new everyday. I keep finding things that scare me and stretch my boundaries. I know my videos are nothing great but I have to start somewhere.

I recently installed dual power poles on my boat since that is the industry direction for walleye fishing with FFS. I’m coming from using a single 12’ talon and kicker to dual 8’ poles with paddles. After adding the talon 4 years ago, I knew it was a permanent necessity. I use it every time I launch and many times on the water. From anchoring in the shallows of the Detroit River, Lake St. Clair, and Lake Erie this has been a key tool for me. Boat control with the talon and Minn Kota Ultrex has let me do some amazing things.
Now I see all the pros with poles, paddles, and brakes, what I don’t hear is how exactly they use them. When, where, how, and why? 8’ gave me some hesitation as did losing the kicker but this is probably the second best tool I’ve put on the boat after FFS. Over 40 hours of use so far in some tough, windy conditions on Burt and Mullet lakes. I used them to some extent everyday whether it was me solo launching or controlling my drifts. These things stabilized the boat and trolling motor in rough conditions. They give you the time to make accurate casts and to get in follow up casts.
