The award winning Japanese lantern hibiscus (Hibiscus schizopetalus), also known as the coral hibiscus, is a tropical shrub famous for its delicate, pendulous blooms that resemble delicate paper lanterns hanging from fine stems. Here are some quick growing tips:
Sunlight: Give it 4 to 6 hours of daily sun, offering light afternoon shade in extreme summer heat.
Soil: Plant in a rich, well-draining soil mix
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, watering thoroughly whenever the top inch feels dry.
Feeding: Feed every 2–3 weeks in spring and summer with a high-potassium, bloom-boosting fertilizer.
Temperature & Pruning: Prune in late winter to encourage new blooming branches, and protect it from temperatures below 50°F. Did you know? It holds the prestigious Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society, recognized for both its outstanding visual appeal and reliable performance in tropical greenhouse and warm garden conditions. And last but not the least.. Just like standard hibiscus blossoms, each individual Japanese lantern flower usually opens and lasts for only a single day. However, because the plant sets so many buds along its arching branches, it can stay in continuous bloom for months on end!! Make sure to add this to your collection of rare/ unique flowering plants.
