OK...let's try this again. The first poll was missing an entry.

We're changing our logo and would like your thoughts! We had almost a thousand entries in our contest and these are the seven finalists. Please vote (just once please!) in this poll for our new logo!

You won't be finding them at Home Depot any time soon...but within the next 10 years, this could hit the market. It wasn't too long from the time blue LEDs were invented (which enabled the ability to create all colors of light) to the time we started seeing white LED fixtures and bulbs in the high-end market.

Anyway...pretty darned cool stuff!!

This white laser could signal a new era in lighting technology that's brighter and more efficient than LEDs.

DK Automation is profoundly saddened by the death of Joel Spira today at the age of 88. Though not a household name, Mr. Spira's influence can be seen in just about every home; he invented the dimmer switch and used it to found Lutron in 1961. Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and the thousands of co-workers and employees he influenced over the years.

Joel Spira, the inventor of the dimmer switch and founder of electronics giant Lutron, died this morning at age 88.

Color is a combination of many things...the color of the light in the room has a significant affect! Remember this when choosing light bulbs...your home can look completely different depending on what color the light is.

Any questions?

Never mind physics. Color isn't just a particular wavelength of light, it turns out. It's a fascinating mix of context and what's happening outside and inside your head. http://n.pr/1ugsXrr

Without this innovation, LEDs would still be limited to nothing more than status indicators (power and charging lights, etc.) sometimes it's the seemingly little breakthroughs that have the most impact.

File this under "Nature is often brighter than we are".

Very often nature has already found a solution...it's our job to find nature's way...

By mimicking the design of a firefly's light-emitting organ, researchers built an LED that shines 55 percent brighter.

So is history. It was a great show...lots going on in the lighting world. Here are my overall impressions/observations:

1. LED is it...with the exception of some retro-style incandescents and specialty extremely high lumen commercial stuff...LED is all there is.

1a. Fluorescent is gone! I talked to some vendors and industry experts who said said overall sales aren't down...but since there is virtually no new research going on and LED prices are falling dramatically, they expect large scale phase outs to begin as they have in the consumer market. I didn't see a single fluorescent tube anywhere...period.

2. There are multitudes of vendors showing virtually identical products. Further, everyone's attempts at differentiating are all heading the same direction...for lamps(bulbs) it's higher CRI and in drivers (the electronic piece that communicates to the LED) it's about being smaller and running cooler.

2a. Because of #2, I expect that the industry is ready to begin paring down as happens in all new tech leaps. Since we have huge players already in the market (Philips, GE, LG, Samsung, etc...) this could turn ugly. Smaller guys could get shafted if they don't get bought out. I expect the commercial side to be a little more tolerant of smaller vendors since there are so many specialty products. I expect the market for drivers and lamps will be down to a handful of companies within the next five years or so, whereas the decorative market will be as diverse as ever (if not more)...but they will all be using only a few different companies' "light engines"...which brings me to:

3. The decorative options for LED seem to be absolutely infinite!! Materials from wood to exotic metals, bendable, shapeable, multi-colored...nothing is off-limits. It used to be that heat and size were issues that decorative fixture makers had to work-around...this is no longer an issue and they've begun to go wild....it's really cool!

4. Shifting color temperature for specific tasks is coming. Control systems (close to my heart) have been used to control dimming for years, soon (and I mean REALLY soon) they will be controlling color temperature as well. You want to read and stay focused? Set your color temperature to 4500K...you want to relax and talk with friends? 2400K should set the mood right. Will you be able to do this with a single replacement lamp? Not anytime soon...but if you're willing to change out your recessed lights and other fixtures, you'll may be able to do with within a few months. And over time, it will become cheaper to do so. Many new homes will be built with this capability in the near future.

5. Organic LED (OLED) is beginning to make a presence. Without getting technical, OLED generates less heat and can create virtually flat sources of light...they can be made to show any color and are very promising for unique decorative fixtures and, in some cases, general illumination. Cost, lifespan, and power consumption are issues that need to be solved before it can become a major player IMO.

As always...if you have any questions or want to discuss anything about lighting...leave your comments here or feel free to call!

Many, by now, know the differences in color temperatures of lamps(bulbs) even if they don't fully understand the terminology. But there's a new term coming and, judging by all the attention being given to it at ...you'll be seeing a lot of it.

The term is CRI...it stands for Color Rendering Index and it's a measure of how well a lamp makes colors appear compared to an "ideal" source. A lot of this is being driven by a new California law which requires a CRI of at least 90 (out of 100) for use in commercial buildings. In general...cheaper LEDs have lower CRIs but it's not always the case. And...I expect the higher CRI lamps to supplant the lesser ones in short order.

The main benefit here is consistency of color...knowing when you buy something in a store that it will look the same at home. It can also have an affect on the visibility and apparent contrast of signs. I'll describe the science a little more later...for now, here is a display that had two lamps...both the same color temperature but with different CRIs. The first lamp was around 80 and the second was 93.
