“What we are teaching and doing here transcends the classroom because students take what they’re learning home and teach their families,” Mary Bowman said. Mary is the head of school or Unci of the Oceti Sakowin Community Academy in Rapid City, SD.

OSCA provides an Indigenized education for Lakota students by Lakota teachers. Mary has countless stories of the impact the Academy has had on her community. Parents and grandparents often tell her that their students take home the traditional teachings they learn at school and share them with their families.

OSCA was developed around four core values: wačhaŋtognake (generosity), wóksape (wisdom), wóohitike (bravery), and wówačhiŋtȟaŋka (fortitude). These principles were adopted as a means to change the narrative of Indigenous people that is taught to students in most US history classes across the country. The often inaccurate and racist lessons are based on a white perspective and glorify the impacts of colonization. Mary’s goal for Indigenous students is to give them a strong cultural understanding of their history and people; to correct the story and provide students with a foundation to understand what really happened to their people.

“Advice from An Old Farmer
Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight and bull-strong.
Keep skunks and bankers at a distance.
Life is simpler when you plow around the stump.
A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor.
Words that soak into your ears are whispered… not yelled.
Meanness don’t jes’ happen overnight.
Forgive your enemies; it messes up their heads.
Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you.
It don’t take a very big person to carry a grudge.
You cannot unsay a cruel word.
Every path has a few puddles.
When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty.
The best sermons are lived, not preached.
Most of the stuff people worry about ain’t never gonna happen anyway.
Don’t judge folks by their relatives.
Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
Live a good, honorable life… Then when you get older and think back, you’ll enjoy it a second time.
Don ‘t interfere with somethin’ that ain’t bothering you none.
Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a Rain dance.
If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin’.
Sometimes you get, and sometimes you get got.
The biggest troublemaker you’ll probably ever have to deal with, watches you from the mirror every mornin’.
Always drink upstream from the herd.
Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta that comes from bad judgment.
Lettin’ the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin’ it back in.
If you get to thinkin’ you’re a person of some influence, try orderin’ somebody else’s dog around..
Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God.
Don’t pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he’ll just kill you.
Most times, it just gets down to common sense.”

Elder's Meditation of the Day - July 1

"I'm an Indian. I'm one of God's children."
-- Mathew King, LAKOTA

My Creator, today let me remember the reason I'm here on Mother Earth. Let me look into
my own eyes and see the beauty You have created. Let me have good thoughts. Being Indian
is not the color of my skin. Being Indian is to listen to my heart, to think only of the things
You have taught, to watch nature, and live in harmony. Being Indian is to walk in prayer, to
talk to You constantly during the day. Being Indian is to act and to walk in a sacred way.

Today, let me think in beauty, let me walk in beauty, let me pray in beauty.
