Fall leaves are beautiful, but once they start piling up, it’s time to think about what to do with them.

A thick layer of leaves left on the lawn can block sunlight and air from reaching the grass, potentially smothering your lawn and creating problems as winter approaches.

But that doesn’t mean every leaf needs to be hauled away! When conditions are right, mulching leaves into small pieces and leaving them on the lawn can return valuable organic matter and nutrients to the soil. The key is keeping the layer thin enough that the grass can still breathe and receive sunlight.

For heavier leaf coverage, raking, blowing, or collecting the excess is a good option. Leaves can also be put to work in garden beds or compost piles, where they can break down and become a valuable soil amendment.
