This BWO soft hackle doesn’t use a single feather.

The Wicked WIRE Pine BWO reimagines the traditional Blue-Winged Olive soft hackle with a sparse collar made from Moonlit Pine Squirrel Zonker.

Spun in a dubbing loop, pine squirrel combines soft underfur with naturally mottled guard hairs that separate, pulse, and breathe in the current. It gives the fly the lifelike movement of a soft hackle while allowing precise control over the collar’s density and length—even on smaller BWO patterns.

That mobile pine squirrel collar is paired with a clean, segmented wire body and an olive beaver-dubbing thorax to create the profile of an emerging Baetis moving toward the surface.

Swing it through a run, dead-drift it through a seam, or trail it behind a BWO dry when trout are feeding just beneath the surface.

Watch This Fly Tie Itself ⚡ The Halo BWO Time-Lapse

CDC fades. Deer hair bulks up. This one just... works.

Watch the Halo BWO come together start to finish in this time-lapse — a slim, upright-wing Blue Winged Olive tied with our brand-new Moonlit Halo Hair instead of fragile CDC or bulky deer hair. Same natural silhouette trout key in on during a Baetis hatch, minus the material headaches.
This is the fly you want in your box before the next overcast, cold-front afternoon rolls through — that's when BWOs go off and everything else on the water goes quiet.

One Twist Changes Everything — Here's the Dubbing Loop Trick We Use on Every Fly 🪶

Ever wonder why some flies just look... alive in the water? 🎣

It comes down to ONE technique: the dubbing loop. In this quick tip, we show you how combining a dubbing loop with a secondary material creates a complex twist that completely changes how your fly moves — more pulse, more motion, more strikes.

We also show off our NIRVANA Dubbing Spinner + Gator Grip — one tool that lets you nail this complex twist every single time, no extra hands needed.

Ever notice how trout can suddenly ignore every dry fly in your box... until you switch to an emerger? 🦟🎣

The BWO Hackle Stacker Emerger is designed for those moments when Blue Winged Olives are hatching and trout are focused on insects just breaking through the surface. Sometimes, matching that vulnerable stage is the difference between watching rises... and watching your indicator disappear.

In this time-lapse, you'll see every step come together—from a bare hook to a finished pattern that's as enjoyable to tie as it is to fish.

Whether you're looking to refine your tying skills, fill your fly box for the next hatch, or simply enjoy the craft, we hope this inspires your next session at the vise.

What BWO pattern has earned a permanent spot in your fly box? We'd love to hear about it in the comments!

If you'd like to tie this pattern yourself, check out the full material list and pattern details through the link in our bio (or in the video description on YouTube).

Tight lines, and happy tying!

🌅 When the PMDs start floating, every cast feels like it could be the one. The quiet rise. The sip. The perfect drift. Those are the moments we tie flies for.

🎥 In today's time-lapse fly tying tutorial, we're tying the Halo Comparadun PMD—a simple, highly effective dry fly that belongs in every trout angler's fly box during PMD hatches.

🎣 Why Halo Hair?

Halo Hair was designed to solve the problems traditional wing materials often create. Its ultra-fine synthetic fibers create a beautifully divided Comparadun wing with exceptional durability, natural movement, and just the right amount of translucency to imitate an emerging mayfly. It flares easily, stays consistent from fly to fly, and won't absorb water like many natural materials—helping your fly stay floating and fish longer.

Whether you're tying a dozen for your next river trip or just sharpening your skills at the vise, this pattern is one you'll reach for again and again.

👍 If you enjoy the video, give it a like, share it with a fellow fly tier, and tag someone who always seems to hit the hatch just right.

Adventure starts long before your boots touch the water—it starts at the vise.

Is This the Ultimate PMD Nymph? 🤔🎣

When trout start keying in on Pale Morning Duns (PMDs), tiny details can make all the difference.

The SlimLINE PMD Nymph is my evolution of the Thread Frenchie, combining its ultra-slim, fast-sinking profile with a subtle, breathing thorax that creates lifelike movement without adding unnecessary bulk.

PMD nymphs are crawlers. They spend their lives moving across the stream bottom before becoming vulnerable as they prepare to emerge. That's exactly what inspired this design—a fly that maintains a natural silhouette while creating just enough movement to convince even selective trout.

Would this fly make it into your PMD fly box?
