Come celebrate heritage in downtown Pocomoke
Join the Sturgis One Room School Museum in Pocomoke for their 2-day event with food, fun, and fellowship. We are one week away from the start of our 5th Annual Juneteenth Celebration.
Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as "Juneteenth" by the newly freed people in Texas.
Event Schedule:
- Open Mic Night: Thursday, June 18th, at 6:30 p.m. at the Pocomoke Library, 401 5th Street (Old Fire Hall). Hosted by Sharnell Tull (a.k.a. Sista Big), we are seeking singers, poets, and spoken word artists to showcase their talent. Lite refreshments and door prizes will be available.
-Community Festival: Saturday, June 20th, from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. at 209 Willow Street, Pocomoke. Enjoy free food, tours of the Sturgis Museum, live performances, a DJ, a bounce house, and face painting.
Our sidewalk vendors will offer food trucks, baked goods, jewelry, apparel, and community resources. We encourage attendees to also visit local Downtown Pocomoke businesses during the festivities.
The Sturgis One Room School Museum is the only African American One Room School in Worcester County retaining its original integrity. This celebration brings together descendants of Sturgis students, board members, and community partners. Everyone is invited to attend.
