A John Denver song still makes me cry in public. So naturally, I turned it into a cryptid business. 😂💚
“Country Roads” has always held a special place in my heart. It reminds me of my grandma, who passed away 10 years ago, and to this day, I STILL get emotional when they play it over a loudspeaker at events. Every. Single. Time. 🙃
When my mom and I started Cryptid Roads, it took us approximately 47 years to agree on a name. 🤣
But when we landed on Cryptid Roads, that was IT.
I’ve always loved West Virginia’s strange history, folklore, and all the weird little things that make this place what it is. As a lifelong creative weirdo myself, the cryptid part just felt right.
So Country Roads became Cryptid Roads, and I designed our logo around the shape of a highway shield, complete with Mothman staring back at us.
Which brings me to these little ornaments!
I thought it’d be fun to turn our logo into an actual miniature highway sign. Seemed simple enough.
Then, because apparently I can’t leave well enough alone, one sign turned into three. 😂
We’ve got the Cryptid Roads shield, a classic West Virginia sign, and a curvy road warning for the NEXT 304 MILES.
Which is honestly just fair.
Each one features a layered, hand-painted wooden scene inspired by the New River Gorge and our curvy mountain roads.
And my favorite part? I designed them to stand on their own too! Hang one on your Christmas tree or keep it on a shelf as a little piece of West Virginia artwork all year long. No need to pack it away come January. 💚
It’s funny how a little idea can bring you right back to where you started.
A little bit of home, a little bit of weird, and a whole lot of West Virginia.
And now that I’ve apparently started making miniature highway signs, I need your help deciding what comes next. 😂
