It’s amazing how much life can be hidden on a single rock!

If you spot what looks like a folded yellow ribbon attached to a rock in the tide pools, you’ve probably found the egg ribbon of a sea lemon nudibranch.

Those delicate folds contain thousands of tiny eggs. After hatching, the larvae spend time drifting with the plankton before settling back onto the seafloor as sponge-eating sea slugs.

At high tide, when the water lifts the ribbon’s delicate folds, it looks almost exactly like a tiny yellow rose blooming under the water.

You don't need a calendar to know the seasons are changing in Point Reyes....just listen for the tule elk bugles.

From August through October, tule elk are in their annual rut, or breeding season, filling the hills with their unmistakable calls. Those bugles serve as both a challenge to rival bulls and an advertisement to nearby cows. Most disagreements end with nothing more than a vocal exchange, but every so often, two determined bulls will meet antler to antler.

We've been hearing those calls echo across Tomales Bay recently, and it's one of our favorite reminders that another season is unfolding in Point Reyes. 🦌

Last night’s Lunar Eclipse paddle couldn’t have unfolded any better.

We launched beneath a thick blanket of fog, with just enough of a sunset peeking through to paint the water. As darkness settled in, the eclipse and fog combined to create perfect conditions to see bioluminescence on a night where we normally wouldn’t be able to see it.

Then, almost on cue, the fog drifted away, the bay turned to glass, and the moon emerged just in time for the peak of the eclipse.

On the paddle home, hundreds of birds filled the night sky above us, their wingbeats echoing through the darkness while distant waves crashed far out on the coast.

That was definitely one of those nights we will never forget!

Happy National Dog Day! ❤️🐾

It’s hard to believe this little guy has been with us for almost six months.

When Zorrito came to us from the streets of Mexico, he weighed just 14 pounds. His back legs barely worked, and for the first few months he didn't shed at all, so we half-joked that maybe we’d somehow adopted a hypoallergenic dog.

Today, he’s 35 pounds, his legs are strong, his fur is VERY capable of shedding 😂, and these days he’s definitely more Zorro than Zorrito.

We were originally told he was probably around three years old, but after watching how much he’s grown, and seeing all the goofy puppy behavior come out, we’re pretty sure he’s younger. Or maybe he just never really got the chance to be a puppy before.

Either way, watching him learn to play, explore, trust, and just be a dog has made us so incredibly happy.

There are places that invite you to do more than simply pass through them.

On September 19th, from 9am–3pm, we're partnering with the amazing local non-profit, In Place and fellow local naturalist and storyteller Claire Peaslee, for a special journey through Drakes Estero. Our paddle will take us from its quiet upper reaches to the place where its waters meet the Pacific.

Along the way, we'll slow down, listen, observe, and explore the many stories held within this incredible estuary, from harbor seals and abundant birdlife to native plants, shifting tides, and the generations of people who have lived in relationship with these waters.

Part kayak adventure, part naturalist exploration, and part invitation to connect more deeply with place.

$225 per person. (Includes local breakfast pastries with a coffee/tea bar at the beginning and lunch on the beach)

This curious young harbor seal stole the show on our bioluminescence kayak camping trip this past weekend.

Harbor seals don't usually come this close, and we always give them plenty of space. But this little one decided to follow us to camp, circled the kayaks, and even tried climbing onto them a few times!

One of our guests later said the most memorable part wasn't how close the seal came...it was locking eyes with a marine mammal.

We have a feeling that's a moment none of us will forget.

Still glowing from our last Locals Only Bioluminescence Tour!

We had such an amazing night out on Tomales Bay with a wonderful group of West Marin folks, and we can’t wait to do it again.

It's hard to believe we are already in August!

Looking back, one of the highlights of our summer was partnering with LandPaths for two Teen River Trek expeditions in June.

Together, we paddled from the redwoods to the ocean, winding through gentle riffles like the one in this video, exploring one of California's most beautiful rivers while watching these incredible young people build confidence, work together, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

We feel honored to be part of a program that inspires the next generation to care for wild places. Thanks, LandPaths! We're already looking forward to next year. 🌲🛶🌊
