While it's still too early to grow black chia seed which I will seed with winter veggies once temps lower to 80 again, an alternate to chia seeds is GLUTEN free toasted nutty Callaloo/ amaranth flower seeds. This is a plant you can eat Entire plant flower, leaves, and stems but unlike raw chia seeds, it needs to be cooked. A nice quick saute to top a left over chicken sandwich or cooked with seasoned rice for nutritious side dish. The more you take leaves or cut it down, it regrows back several times. Seeds/flowers: Gently toast flower head seeds in pan til they pop and add to puddings, cereals, pancakes. You have seen the giants all around Disney in landscape, and it does make a stunning landscape plant as well, but an edible one. Here are photos my dwarf red just now going to seed. I can choose to drop the seeds in pot to regen again, or eat. I like to add Amaranth to stews, soups, salads as to me, it's not really a stand alone salad maker for me, rather a nutritional add to meals. But you decide for your household! Look up nutritional value. I drop a few seeds in various pots, the last 2 photos is a mix of zinnias, Egyptian spinach, and dwarf red amaranth. The little 4" pot I sprinkled seeds to regen a few to keep over winter.

Polk city, FL....uh oh! Looks like I may have a pre opening garden seedling sale in a couple of weeks. Cukes, Beans, dry beans, and Squash loving these temps and jumping to get planted. These are SPECIFIC VARITIES that will grow in temps up to 90 degrees. $1.50 each 2"/3" cell plant. I am not raising prices this fall. Cash and ZELLE. Call to schedule pick up appt. 863-274-0079.
