This is a lovely tree, its roots make your yard hard to cut. Its leaves open and close. And it spreads easily. Not native.

While we largely post pictures of Georgia native plants, occasionally we want to point out plants that are so common in places that people might think they are native. One such plant is blooming now – it is Albizia julibrissin, often called Mimosa. It was brought to the US in 1745 from Asia and has naturalized into many parts of the country but especially on the Eastern side and is now classified as invasive. While some people like to point out that some creatures benefit from it when it is flowering, it is important to realize that it offers no other significant benefits and it displaces native plants (that could be benefiting wildlife more) due to its shade and root competition.
