We have been a part of this organization for almost a year and we are now featured on their "How To Switch" ---> "Tackle" ---> "Manufacturers and Retailers of Lead-Free Tackle."
This is a comprehensive list, based out of Minnesota, of businesses and suppliers that provide lead-free options for tackle. These agencies, such as the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, focus on the effect that lead has on our environment and have taken the initiative to encourage lead-free manufacturers and retailers to submit their information to be added to this list. There are other lists out there, but this one includes manufacturers and retailers around the U.S., not just one specific area.
As we all know, lead is severely toxic to bird species/waterfowl who scavenge around pebbles and sand to find food (e.g. loons), humans (especially children), fish and many more species.
Just a little statistic to throw out there : it is estimated that about 25% of adult loon deaths are directly attributed to lead poisoning after ingesting lead tackle. They mistake lead pieces and tackle for food while scavenging through pebbles, sand, or rocks. They ingest these pieces which travel to their gizzard for breakdown and ultimately leads to lead poisoning then many times to fatal results.
Although limited research has been done in Texas on the effects of lead and the loon migration here in the winter months, lead is heavily used in our area year round. This is just one of many goals we hope to accomplish by teaming up with Sporting Lead Free : how lead directly affects our beautiful ecosystem. We hope this is a "part of a start" to share knowledge.
We are proud to state that we have the stamp showing all of our products are lead-free, not just our jig heads and hooks.
This organization focuses on the benefits of switching to lead-based tackle, educating others on the effects lead has to our environment (in the hunting and fishing aspect), and encouraging others to try a lead-alternative.
**PS : there are many other businesses on this list that offer lead-free options, and some even offer buy-back programs. Even further, some are 100% lead-free as well. The goal isn't to ban lead, just bring awareness the effects lead has to our environment and to educate others that there are other options, many just as effective if not more effective, than lead-based tackle.**
